Some neighbors in the Whistler Park area are concerned about potential changes. One is property owned by the school district in the park, which could become employee housing. The Steamboat Springs School Board is discussing it at their meeting this afternoon. David Karlin lives at Whistler and Stone Lane. He says the housing would take away a good part of Whistler Park which is the only city park that also has fields on the mountain side. Of town.

“The big issue here is not that we’re against housing, especially for teachers and affordable housing. We all know that’s not the biggest one. The biggest issue is in the city. The real question on the table is where do you put this housing. With Whistler Park, instead of putting the teacher housing in a place that is more suitable for development, it doesn’t have another function, you would be replacing what is now one of the only or limited open space and city parks in the mountain where people play soccer in the fields and people can do that. So you’re taking away a very significant need of the community for another need vs putting the housing somewhere where you don’t have to give up on one of these critical needs.”

Neighbors also are unhappy about a proposed bridge at the end of Stone Lane which would go over Walton Creek through to three hotels to Highway 40. They say one big reason is extra traffic would disrupt the neighborhood. City Manager Gary Suiter says the bridge is in the early stages and “not a done deal.”

The Yampa River has reopened for recreational use. It’s thanks to the cooler weather and rain this weekend. Water temperatures in the Yampa have cooled off for the fish. Happy tubing and fishing and paddle boarding and playing in the C-Hole.

You can get reimbursed up to $500 for doing wildfire mitigation around your home. The Routt County Wildfire Mitigation Council is managing the program.  There are three categories that can qualify you for the rebate. They have to do with fencing, screening vents, and keeping vegetation more than five feet from your home. The deadline to apply is Aug. 30. Questions? Email info@routtwildfire.org  Apply for the rebate

Fences are Fuses — One of the insights gained from the Marshall Fire was how easily combustible fences allowed fire to travel from house to house. The Fences Are Fuses rebate can help you replace the first five feet of fencing touching your home with a non-combustible material like metal, or help you replace wooden fencing where it is within five feet of a structure.

Screening Vents – The rebate can help you install metal screening with no more than an 1/8” gauge on the vents. This prevents embers from getting blown into the vents under your eaves, into your crawl space, under your deck, and into your attic. Screening vents is one of the cheapest, easiest, high-impact mitigation measures you can take to protect your home.

First Five Feet – This is where you would replace combustible materials and vegetation within five feet of your home. Use rocks instead of mulch. Remove flammable bushes.

The Moffat County Fair wrapped up this past weekend with the Cowboy Baby Contest, dog races, the pie-eating showdown, and the Livestock Auction. The Grand Champion Swine winner was 10-year-old Timber Weber. He worked with his gilt named Sizzles to get her to show well in the ring.

“Cause I practiced every day. And I worked hard. My biggest worry was his head. In the beginning of the year, I didn’t get it up very good. So then I worked harder and harder, and I accomplished what I wanted and then I got Grand!”

Timber’s older brother, Koy, was Grand Champion Reserve.

And County Commissioner Donald Broom had to “Kiss the Pig.”

There are lots of pictures from the Moffat County Fair on the KRAI & 55 Country Facebook page.
