Work is being done on the Stockbridge Pedestrian Bridge along the Yampa River Core Trail. That work is scheduled to start Tuesday morning, Sept. 3. The bridge is being refurbished with new decking, a new railing, and new paint. The 132-foot bridge has deteriorated because of the harsh weather conditions. Work on the Stockbridge Pedestrian Bridge should last into early October and it will be closed during that time.

Detour Information: A detour will be set up so that Core Trail users can bypass the closed area by traveling along US40 between Indian Trails and Dream Island Plaza, before rejoining the trail via West Lincoln Park.

Press Release from the City of Steamboat Springs; August, 2024.

Stockbridge Pedestrian Bridge Refurbishment Planned

Closure Anticipated To Begin After Labor Day & Last Until Early October

STEAMBOAT SPRINGS, COLORADO-August 21, 2024-The Stockbridge Pedestrian Bridge, a key link on the Yampa River Core Trail for access west of downtown and from the Stockbridge Transit Center, is slated for refurbishment starting as early as Tuesday, September 3, and will close to all traffic during the multi-week project.

“These bridges take a beating from dramatic changes in weather, such as hot dry temperatures in summer to months of snow and below freezing winter conditions,” said Parks & Recreation Project Manager Aaron Stafford. “This project is vital to ensuring the structure remains in a safe and structurally sound condition and connectivity is maintained.”

The city has contracted with Sloop Painting to complete the upcoming decking, railing, and painting project. The bridge crosses the Yampa River and is located between Stockbridge Transit Center and the historic Depot. Sloop Painting is no stranger to this type of project as they did the work on several other pedestrian bridges including most recently Walton Creek.

The bridge decking is rough, splitting, and in need of repair and will be completely replaced per recommendations from the city’s bridge inspection consultant Stantec. The 132-foot bridge will also be painted as the current paint has deteriorated over time. Overnight temperatures and dew point will be an important factor in how quickly the bridge will be able to be painted.

Sloop Painting plans to begin work on the morning of Tuesday, September 3, and the project is expected to last into early October. During this time, the bridge will be closed to the public and a detour will be required to travel around the bridge.

Detour Information: A detour will be set up so that Core Trail users can bypass the closed area by traveling along US40 between Indian Trails and Dream Island Plaza, before rejoining the trail via West Lincoln Park.
