A longtime Steamboat Springs business owner died skiing at Steamboat Resort Tuesday. 70-year-old Pete Van De Carr owns Backdoor Sports on Yampa Street. Steamboat Radio News sends our deepest condolences to the Van De Carr family.
If you’re headed into the backcountry, be aware of avalanche conditions, especially after all of the heavy snow and multiple Avalanche Warnings at the beginning of the week.
Brian Lazar with the Colorado Avalanche Information Center says more snow is expected Thursday and Thursday night.
“This will continue to add fuel for wind-drifted snow and it’s going to be those wind-drifted slopes at the higher elevation, particularly in high rocky areas that remain the most dangerous.”

The heavy snow has presented another danger. The City of Steamboat Springs says be aware of how much snow is on your roof, and whether it can slide off and create a snowslide. Snow can drift over the edge of a roof, and ice can build up on structures. This snow and ice can break off and fall on someone who might be walking below. Be aware of children playing in those areas.

Dr. Mathew Neal, the superintendent of the Moffat County School District has been named to the Colorado Department of Education State Review Panel for this year. He is just one of two superintendents statewide. It is Dr. Neal’s fourth year on the panel, which is tasked with considering schools and districts with Priority Improvement and Turnaround plans. “The panel provides a critical evaluation of adopted plans for these schools or districts and provides recommendations to the Commissioner and State Board of Education on potential actions when a school or district remains on the accountability clock for more than five years (or earlier upon request).”

The Moffat County Board of County Commissioners today has a Special Board meeting with Roy Tipton and the Office of Development Services for the county. They’ll review an offer for some county-owned property at 539 Barclay Street.
SBT GRVL ride organizers are hosting a rural community information session in Hayden. It is at 5:30 p.m., Wednesday, Feb. 19 at The Granary. Community members are invited to ask questions about the new format and address any concerns about the event which is June 28-29, 2025.
The Tracks and Trails Museum in Oak Creek has a talk tonight on Timber & Logging in South Routt, with historian Paul Bonnifield. It’s at 5:30 p.m. tonight at the museum at 129 E. Main Street in Oak Creek. The event is free.
Join United Way of the Yampa Valley for some coffee, community, and conversation on Thursday. It’s a new gathering on the first and third Thursday of every month, from 9:30-10:30 a.m. at the Yampa Building, at 775 Yampa Ave. in Craig. Jen Bruen, the Executive Director of United Way of the Yampa Valley, says to bring your friends and neighbors and connect with others in the community.
“It’s just for human connection and it is winter and we all need it. We all need to be able to talk about the issues that are going on in our lives and in our community and just share good stuff too. It’s just human connection over some coffee and pastries that United Way of the Yampa Valley will provide. But again, no agenda. Just conversation.”
The United Way gathering is free, and made possible by a grant from Yampa Valley Community Foundation.
Meet Smokey Bear at Steamboat Resort on Thursday, Feb. 20. Smokey will take you on a fun ski down the green run “Why Not” while you learn about the various wildlife that calls Steamboat Resort home. Meet Smokey at the top of the Steamboat Gondola near the Why Not trailhead at 1 p.m. This is free, but you’ll need a lift ticket. This is in partnership with the USDA Forest Service and Yampatika.
Ten U.S. athletes have been named to compete in the 2025 FIS Nordic World Championships in Norway, Feb. 27-March 9. Six are from Steamboat Springs. They are: Alexa and Haley Brabec, Annika and Niklas Malacinski, Ella Wilson, and Erik Lynch.
