Avalanche danger continues to be high in the backcountry, with an Avalanche Watch moving into an Avalanche Warning through Friday night. Here’s Brian Lazar with the Colorado Avalanche Information Center.

“That means dangerous avalanche conditions are here. We are no longer expecting them. They are here right now. They are on our doorstep. And during the period of avalanche warnings we simply recommend people do not travel in or under backcountry avalanche terrain.”

The town of Granby is reporting a mountain lion that has been spotted in the town. Granby Police say to haze it away if you see it, and not to let a mountain lion ever become comfortable in your yard.

A new playground is being planned for Emerald Park. It will be bigger than what’s there now. Two open houses are scheduled from 5-6:30 p.m. on March 19 and April 30 in the community room at Howelsen Ice Arena. Designs will be finalized with construction set to begin the fall and the new playground to be complete by summer 2026.

Sizzling salsas were on the menu last night in Yampa at the 2nd Annual Fired-Up Salsa Contest and Loaded Nacho Night. It was a fundraiser at the Ladies Aid Hall in Yampa to support the annual 4th of July Parade and celebration in South Routt County.  VIDEO of the event

Strawberry Park Elementary hosted happy families from throughout Steamboat Springs for the Family Reading Jamboree Thursday evening. Everyone enjoyed reading and raffles, games, pizza, and more.

 

Happening today…

 

The Hayden Taphouse is now open for business from noon to 10 p.m. on Friday, March 7, at 200 N. Walnut Street in Hayden. The new taphouse will feature a 32-tap selection serving up a large mix of craft beer, bourbon-focused cocktails, wines, and many non-alcoholic options. There are also lots of arcade games and a dining menu from Sage & Spirit.

 

The 78th Annual Kiwanis Play is March 7-8 in the Pavilion at the Moffat County Fairgrounds. Doors open at 7 p.m. and the fun starts at 8 p.m. Tickets are $35 each or $250 for a table of eight.) To reserve a table, call 970-629-9062, or 970-629-5157.

 

 

Tonight is Friday Night Fun with Friends in Craig, with the Friends of Natural History Museum at CNCC. The event is from 5-7 p.m. at the Chamber building in Craig tonight.

 

Saturday…

The 11th Annual STARS Mountain Challenge is this Saturday, March 8, at Steamboat Resort. All proceeds support the STARS adaptive programs designed for individuals with disabilities. Get your team together, dress up in costume, and sign up today for this very fun fundraiser.

There is a “Sensory Friendly Movie,” at 1 p.m. Saturday, March 8, in Craig. The movie, “Paddington 3” is free at West Twin Cinema, and presented by Harmonie House. A sensory friendly movie means the lights are left on a little, and the sound is turned down to accommodate sensory needs. Everyone is allowed to wiggle and giggle a little without worrying about disturbing others.

 

The first Bud Light Rocks The Boat Free Concert Series is Saturday afternoon at Steamboat Resort. The band is Clay Street Unit. They’ll be on the Steamboat stage for the free concert Saturday afternoon.

 

 

In sports…

The #32 seeded Steamboat Springs Sailors Boys Basketball team will be playing #1 seeded Kent Denver in the CHSAA Class 4A Basketball State Playoffs on Friday, March 7th at 5:00 p.m. Congratulations and Go Sailors!

 

The Moffat County Girls Basketball team is in the Round of 32 for the state playoffs. Their first game is tonight at 8 p.m. against D’Evelyn. That game is being played on the Front Range.

 

Also in Craig, sports officials are wanted for baseball in May and soccer in July, followed by fall football. The minimum age is 14. Reach out to the Parks and Recreation Department with the City of Craig. It’s also time to sign up for the summer sports season. Call Travis at 970-826-2006.
