Press Release from Routt County; July 14, 2025.

Operation Sky Hammer at Yampa Valley Regional Airport

Routt County, CO, July 14, 2025 – Travelers in and out of Yampa Valley Regional Airport (YVRA) this summer may notice a new addition to the tarmac near the main terminal. Starting this month, a team of two Skycrane helicopters will be positioned at YVRA ready and available for regional fire response as part of a new program, Operation Sky Hammer, through the USDA Forest Service.

“This innovative program is adding capacity to our wildland firefighting response in Colorado and throughout the Rocky Mountain Region,” said Troy Heithecker, Regional Forester for the Rocky Mountain Region. “Coupled with the modernized airtanker base in Colorado Springs and our other airtanker bases across our region, we will be able to respond more quickly and efficiently when wildfires start.”

YVRA and the Atlantic Aviation FBO are able to provide the firefighting team with secure access to office space, a kitchen and other facilities, and parking for support equipment and passenger vehicles. The team will also be able to take advantage of YVRA amenities while onsite during the contract.

“YVRA is proud to host U.S. Forest Service Operation Sky Hammer at our facility, it reinforces our shared commitment to wildfire preparedness and rapid response,” said Airport Director Tinneal Gerber. “By providing critical infrastructure and support, we’re helping ensure our community and surrounding areas are better protected during peak fire season.”

Routt County is proud to partner with the USDA Forest Service and take advantage of their strong wildland firefighting force. In extremely active fire years, the agency can deploy more than 32,000 wildfire responders including agency employees; tribal, state, local and international partners; and contract and administratively determined emergency hires. The Forest Service manages over 70% of the federal wildland firefighting resources and nearly all federal aviation and logistical support contracts. This year, the Forest Service will have more than 400 total aircraft available nationwide, including multi-engine airtankers, helicopters, multi-engine water scoopers and other firefighting aircraft.

As always, we ask the public to do its part to help prevent wildfires:

  • know when fire restrictions are in place
  • learning how to prevent starting wildfires while recreating on public lands
  • prepare homes and communities to be wildfire ready

RouttWildfire.org o www.LiveWildfireReady.org.
