The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (USFWS) has confirmed how two gray wolves have died.

Female gray wolf #2514 died in Rocky Mountain National Park on April 20 from an apparent mountain lion attack.

A second female gray wolf, #2512, died in northwest Colorado on May 15, apparently from a lawful foothold trap used for catching coyotes. The owners of the property had permission for the traps. When the trapped wolf was discovered, CPEW was notified and the animal was released. The agency received a mortality signal the next day. The trap was placed lawfully so there won’t be any charges.

The death of a third male collared gray wolf, #2507, that died on May 31 is still being investigated.
