The City of Steamboat Springs wants to remind everyone about sidewalks downtown. It is illegal to ride anything with wheels on sidewalks on Lincoln Ave., from 3rd to 13th Street. That includes bikes, and skateboards, roller skates and in-line skates, and scooters. Wheelchairs are allowed.
Use the bike lanes on Oak Street, Yampa Street, or ride the Core Trail, always wear a helmet, and have a front light if you’re riding from dusk to dawn. Also, follow all local traffic and trail rules.

These Boots Were Made for Walking on Lincoln Sidewalks
No Bikes, No Boards, No Blades Permitted on Main Street Sidewalks
STEAMBOAT SPRINGS, COLORADO-August 7, 2025-To help ensure a safe and enjoyable experience for everyone, the city reminds community members and visitors that bicycles and other wheeled devices are not permitted on the sidewalks along Lincoln Avenue between 3rd and 13th Streets.
This downtown corridor experiences significant foot traffic throughout the year. When bicycles, skateboards, scooters, and other wheeled devices are used on sidewalks in this area, it creates unsafe conditions for pedestrians and increases the risk of accidents.
According to City Ordinance Sec. 10-103, it is illegal to ride or operate bicycles, skateboards, roller skates or in-line skates, scooters, and other wheeled devices on Lincoln Avenue sidewalks from 3rd to 13th Streets: Anyone traveling with one of these devices must dismount and walk their bike or carry their equipment through this area.
“Keeping sidewalks safe and accessible for pedestrians is a priority, especially in the heart of our community,” said Community Service Supervisor Krista Amatuzio. “We want to make sure people walking, dining, and shopping downtown feel secure and comfortable. That means encouraging riders to use appropriate alternative routes.”
Cyclists and other users of wheeled devices should utilize the dedicated bike lanes on Oak Street and Yampa Street, or take advantage of the Yampa River Core Trail, which offers a scenic and safe route through downtown.
The city also reminds riders of several key safety regulations:
- Helmets are required by law for anyone under age 16 when riding a bicycle or e-bike, including as a passenger.
- From dusk to dawn, bicycles must be equipped with a front white light visible from 500 feet, a red rear reflector visible from 600 feet, and side visibility using reflectors or lights.
- All riders must obey posted signage and follow local traffic and trail rules.
Violations of the no-wheels-on-sidewalks ordinance may result in fines: $25 for the first offense, $50 for the second offense, and $75 for third and subsequent offenses. Parents and guardians are responsible for ensuring minors follow these rules.
