The Crosho Fire… the evacuation order for Zone 2 in South Routt County has been lifted. The fire is at 14% contained and had burned 2,037 acres as of Monday afternoon. Twelve crews and 300 personnel are at the scene. There is a concern about warmer drier weather expected this week, which could increase fire behavior.
The Colorado Water Congress starts Tuesday at the Steamboat Grand. Senators Michael Bennet and John Hickenlooper will be there with Congressman Joe Neguse, and Governor Polis and other top state and local elected officials, including Colorado Attorney General Phil Weiser. He says the Water Congress started in the ‘50s to get a collaboration and dialog started with all water users.
“We have a limited amount of water and there is so much demand for it. That challenge is greater now than ever because of our changing climate. So we’re having conversations about what conservation can look like in our future, what adaptable uses can look like, how we make sure that in Colorado, everyone is treated fairly and has access to water.”
U.S. Senator Michael Bennet and Congressman Joe Neguse are hosting a Town Hall at 3 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 19, in Steamboat Springs. Register to attend and you will then receive details on event location. A link is on the Community Calendar on our website.
We will have some guest DJs this afternoon on Easy 94-1. We’ll hear from Attorney General Phil Weiser and U.S Senator John Hickenlooper, so make sure to tune in, starting at 3 p.m.
Attorney General Phil Weiser is also speaking at a STAND Town Hall about Discrimination in Routt County. STAND is Steamboat Team to Disrupt Antisemitism and Discrimination. That’s at 5:30 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 19, in Library Hall.
Also tonight, Steamboat Springs City Council meets at 5 p.m.
The Upper Yampa Water Conservancy District and the Colorado Water Trust invite to a community celebration from 5-6:30 p.m. Tuesday, August 19 at the Art Depot. River in Motion is a celebration of the collaborative community efforts that keep the Yampa flowing. It will feature the many organizations that work together to boost river flows. Admission is free, but seating is limited so you are encouraged to register in advance at https://events.humanitix.com/river-in-motion-community-celebration.
Even if you can’t make the celebration, you can always track river flows using the Yampa River Dashboard at youryampariver.org.
The Routt County Humane Society is participating in the ASPCA’s Rescue Effect campaign which provides grants to help get pets to their own home, rather than at the shelter. Three pets are especially needing a home. Descriptions are next to their picture. Find out more at www.RouttHumane.org Photos courtesy Hannah Wine.
- Mancha has been at the local shelter for almost all of her five years.

Today is the first day of school for students in the Steamboat Springs School District and South Routt District. Hayden started yesterday. Moffat County kids were in school last week. It means more buses and cars and kids riding their bikes to get to school so plan on a little bit of extra time today to get where you have to go.
One more reminder on that, the City of Steamboat Springs wants to remind everyone about sidewalks downtown. It is illegal to ride anything with wheels on sidewalks on Lincoln Ave., from 3rd to 13th Street. That includes bikes, and skateboards, roller skates and in-line skates, and scooters. (Wheelchairs are allowed.) Use the bike lanes on Oak Street, Yampa Street, or ride the Core Trail, always wear a helmet, and have a front light if you’re riding from dusk to dawn. Also, follow all local traffic and trail rules.
More on the Story — No bikes, no boards, no blades on sidewalks in downtown Steamboat Springs
