U.S. Fish and Wildlife Services has released the cause of death of the wolf that died in northwest Colorado in late May as blunt force trauma from a suspected vehicle collision. Steamboat Radio News received reports that this happened north of Hayden. No other details are being released by Colorado Parks and Wildlife.

Ten thousand flags are being placed on the lawn of Yampa Valley Bank today, along Hwy 40 in Steamboat Springs. It is for the annual Yampa Valley Bank Flags of Honor – 9/11 Never Forget project that honors those who lost their lives on 9/11, and the rescue professionals who were impacted afterwards. Student groups from the high school, sports teams, Boy Scouts and Girl Scouts, along with other organizations will be doing the flag placement starting around 4 p.m. A brief ceremony thanking local first responders is then at 5 p.m. The SSHS Cross Country team has been invited to run the larger first responder flags from Steamboat Springs High School to Yampa Valley Bank. Also attending will be members of the Routt County Sheriff’s Office, Steamboat Springs Police and Steamboat Springs Fire Rescue. The flags will be on display on September 11. The flags will be removed on the morning of Sept. 12 by students from Yampa Valley School.

Three at-large candidates for Steamboat Springs City Council have withdrawn their petitions to run in November. They are Walter Magill, Kim Haggarty and Blythe Casner (Per Colorado Revised Statute Section 31-10-303). They missed the deadline to withdraw so their names will still be on the ballot, but they are no longer running.

Colorado Parks and Wildlife has distributed $2.25 million dollars to 36 counties, as part of their Backcountry Search and Rescue Program (BSAR). This includes $67,038 to Routt County. It’s to help support local search and rescue teams who assist people during outdoor recreational emergencies and keep community safe.

If you’re interested in learning about the new Cottonwoods at Mid Valley, stop by The Boathouse from 4-6 p.m. tonight at 609 Yampa Street. There will be a short presentation. Eligible prospective buyers for The Cottonwoods through Yampa Valley Housing Authority will be able to apply sometime soon. If approved, there will be a lottery for unit selection early next year.

Motorcyclists need to especially use caution this month. Colorado Department of Transportation says 165 motorcyclists were killed on Colorado roads last year with 33 of those deaths in September. Motorcycle deaths are up 57% since 2015. CDOT says follow the speed limit and wear a helmet. Last year 44% of motorcyclists killed in traffic crashes weren’t wearing a helmet.

That word “hyperphagia” is in the news again. That’s when hungry bears get more intense about finding food to prepare their bodies to survive the winter. Lock your car doors and trash cans. No bird seed. Be careful with food if you’re camping. And watch your pet food and BBQ grills. Colorado Parks and Wildlife says bears will be traveling up to 20 hours a day, trying to fatten up with 20,000 calories. That’s the same as twenty chicken sandwiches, 10 large orders of French Fries, 10 soft drinks and 10 milkshakes. This big bear is frequently spotted in the Blue Sage and Fish Creek Falls Road area. The Steamboat High School Mountain Bike Team had another big division win over the weekend at the Showdown in the ‘Boat. The Steamboat team dominated the Yampa division in the Colorado High School Cycling League. Thirty-eight athletes competed in the race on Emerald Mountain. All of the individual results are on our website.
