The Steamboat Springs Cross Country team competed in the Mountain States Challenge in Grand Junction Friday, in a rainstorm.

Here’s more from Head Coach Lisa Renee Tumminello.

“With the heavy rain in the area, the course was changed from a golf course to Central Grand Junction high school. Our athletes rallied to race in the heavy rain and were blazing fast on a brand new course. There was much standing water and tight corners to maneuver, with two boys races (broken into waves) and two ladies’ races (also broken into waves). This made for a challenge as they were racing athletes who started at different times and with 28 extremely competitive teams. Our athletes had some of their best performances of the season and career Personal Records as well. The cool temps, harder racing surface and massively competitive field were a recipe for greatness from the Sailors! The tenacity and determination from our team was super impressive.”

“On our ladies’ Varsity Squad, Ayla Oslowski led the charge in 31st/181 athletes, then Whitney Warnke, Emerald Weber, Evie Fisher, Miya Lippuner, Carson Dressendorfer, Lily Garey and Gigi Lobeck.”

“On the gentlemen’s side, freshman Conor Devin led the squad again this week, with Gavin Hendricks close behind and then Quentin Nance, Bode Rhodes, Sawyer Landers, Benji Langness, Jacob Gonzales, and Ryan Becker.”

The Sailors are co-hosting the next meet on Friday with Moffat County, at the Yampa Valley Golf Course in Craig.
