Memorial Regional Health Celebrates 75th Anniversary

CRAIG, COLO. — Memorial Regional Health (MRH) has served Craig, Moffat County, and the surrounding communities for 75 years — a milestone made possible by the trust of its patients, the dedication of its providers, and the support of local partners.

The 75th celebration kicked off Wednesday with a Community Mixer under the theme “75 Years of Care — and We’re Just Getting Started!” The event brought together community members, MRH staff and supporters to reflect on MRH’s 75 years of service, share stories, and look ahead to the future of local healthcare. Guests enjoyed light refreshments, explored photo displays and historical highlights, entered giveaways, and connected with MRH providers, staff, and neighbors. It was a meaningful moment to honor shared history and the people who continue to shape the next chapter of care in the community.

“Our 75th anniversary isn’t just about looking back — it’s about looking ahead. The resilience and dedication I’ve seen over the years give me great hope for what’s next for MRH and the community we serve,” said MRH CEO, Jennifer Riley.

Far-flung from the amenities of big cities, Moffat County’s medical history revolves around rural facilities, patients and the providers who choose to live and work here. That story began in 1946, when a group of Craig citizens joined forces to build a local hospital through community fundraising and a Hill-Burton grant. Their efforts led to the dedication of The Memorial Hospital on Tucker Street in 1949, which opened its doors the following year in 1950. In 1952, the hospital was deeded to the citizens of Moffat County, establishing it as a county-owned facility — a foundation of local pride that continues today.

Surgeon Dr. Jeffrey Womble, MRH’s longest-tenured provider and the hospital’s Chief of Staff, has seen changes, thanks to investments in healthcare by MRH, in many cases those changes are for the better.

“When I first started in 2007, we were still in the old hospital,” Dr. Womble said. “My partner and I were the only employed doctors. Our offices along with visiting ortho and urology were in thebasement. The building was so old that we couldn’t have an MRI on site due to the electrical requirements. When the new hospital was built (in 2019), it was great.”

Over the past 75 years, MRH has continually evolved to meet the changing needs of the region. What began as a small community hospital has grown into a comprehensive health system offering advanced diagnostics, orthopedic, surgical specialties, cardiopulmonary rehabilitation, behavioral health services, and more. From expanding technology to recruiting skilled providers across multiple disciplines, MRH remains committed to bringing high-quality care close to home — right here in Moffat County.

MRH looks to strengthen the future by investing in programs that help providers put down roots—through mentorship, professional growth, loan repayment support, and local training pipelines. Expanding community-based projects like mobile clinics, preventive outreach, and local partnerships will help meet patients’ needs in new ways, while deeper collaboration with regional partners will expand access to specialty care and create a more connected healthcare network across northwest Colorado.
The 75th celebration will continue into 2026 while the community shares favorite MRH memories, and explore unique giving opportunities through the MRH Foundation that honor the past while investing in the future of local healthcare.
