Passports are not being processed at the Steamboat Springs Post Office. They haven’t been processed for about a month, due to staffing issues. But local Postmaster Alex Garza says it is temporary.

“We are getting back to full staff shortly, so we will resume passport acceptance within a month, so I would say mid-December. We have to get the new people trained so they are able to handle the back and then our passport clerk can be in the front.”

Three new postal employees have just been hired and are being trained for the Steamboat Springs Post Office.

Garza says the post office in Craig has not been doing passports for about a year.

If you need a new passport, for the first time, you will have to travel to the post office in Vail or in Glenwood Springs. There is a full-time passport clerk at each location.

Check requirements online for passports for children. Both parents need to be with the children, unless there is a notarized document for the one parent who can’t be there. Those details are in the link below.

  • Both parents or guardians must give their approval for a child to receive a passport and must be present with the child when applying.
  • If one or both parents or guardians cannot be present with the child, you will need to show us more documents.
  • You cannot renew a child’s passport using Form DS-82.
  • Passports for children under age 16 are valid for 5 years.

Current passports can also be renewed online. That information is below.

Passport Information from Travel.State.Gov – U.S. Department of State

  • Children under age 16
  • Children age 16 and 17
  • I’m an adult renewing by mail
  • I’m an adult renewing online
  • Report it lost or stolen
  • Change my name or correct an error

Garza also says a clerk is still needed for the post office in Clark. An employee transferred from out-of-state to take the job but it didn’t work out. He says the job will be posted to postal employees nationwide.
