A suspected fugitive from Texas was apprehended at the base of Steamboat Resort Wednesday afternoon. Steamboat Springs Police were notified by U.S. Marshals that Isaac Van Marcantel had a warrant out for his arrest for Armed Robbery. They said he was snowboarding at Steamboat Resort. Local police worked with the security team at Steamboat Resort and the Routt County Sheriff’s Office to find Van Marcantel, who is now at the Routt County Jail.
At the same time, a home alarm went off in the area, so out of an abundance of caution, the SWAT team from Moffat and Routt County was assembled, just in case the alarm may have been triggered by the suspect. But it wasn’t.
A box of pipe bombs was detonated Tuesday night in Craig, by the Grand Junction Police Bomb Unit. The pipes were found in a metal box in the basement of the Barely Spent Thrift Store at 468 Ranney Street. Here’s Craig Police Chief Mike Cochran.
“No concern or danger to the community at this time. It is not something that we really see in this area. But it was handled relatively quick with no incident.”
Chief Cochran says the owner of the Thrift Store isn’t sure how long the box of pipe bombs had been in the basement. Craig Police evacuated the building until the Grand Junction Bomb Unit could get there and detonate the bombs east of Craig in a gravel pit. There were no injuries.

Open burn season is underway through mid-April, for the Steamboat Springs Fire Protection District. This is for essential agricultural burns, such as ditch burning for irrigation, weed control, and crop production. Slash piles for wildland fire mitigation projects are also allowed. There are rules, such as there has to be at least six inches of snow on the ground at and around the burn site. No burns are allowed within city limits. And you need a permit with Routt County Environmental Health.
