Wednesday was the first day of the 2026 State Legislative Session and the 75th General Assembly at the State Capitol in Denver. State Senator Dylan Roberts, who represents Senate District 8, which includes Routt and Moffat counties, has the first bill of the session.
“My first bill is actually Senate Bill One and I’m very grateful for this opportunity. This is going to be a bill focused on affordable housing and giving our county governments and partners more flexibility in how they can spend some of their county funds to build more workforce housing and expand the use of the middle-income housing tax credit.”



Yampa Valley Housing Authority met with Overland Property Group (OPG) and the property management company, Mission Rock Residential Wednesday, along with city and county leaders. At a meeting Wednesday, concerns with low-income housing properties they are poorly managed was discussed, specifically, The Reserves at Steamboat Springs, Alpenglow Village, and Anglers 400. Both groups accepted responsibility for improvements moving forward, and will deliver new action plans by Jan. 21. OPG openly agreed that “two years of failures” is unacceptable.

There is a proposal to sell the Browns Park School in northwestern Colorado, to Moffat County. It’s on 2.13 acres. It would be sold no less than fair market value. The school was inadvertently placed on public land in 1945. Students attended it from 1945 to 1991, and it is now used for events, like Wild Bunch Days in August. The Bureau of Land Management is looking for public comment on the proposal. Any comments need to be submitted to the BLM Little Snake Field Office in Craig at 970-826-5000, before March 2. The outdoor sheet of ice at the Howelsen Hill tennis courts is open, as of last night. The rink is available for public skating, figure skating, and informal hockey fun. It’s open every night from 5-10 p.m. and closed during the day to save the ice during warmer weather. One sheet is available so skaters and hockey players are asked to share. The rink is managed by the Howelsen Ice Arena staff.

Visit Moffat County / Moffat County Tourism Association has a board meeting at 3 p.m. today, in the Yampa Building in Craig. Agenda items include a financial report and an update on the display at Yampa Valley Regional Airport in Hayden. New board members will also be introduced.

Coffee with Council is at 8 a.m. Friday, Jan. 16. Meet with available Steamboat Springs City Council members in the Paachihpi Community Room in City Hall at 115 10th Street. During Coffee with Council, councilors are looking to gauge the community’s tastes buds for a caffeinated discussion (no presentations) on whatever is top of mind for residents.


The U.S. Ski Flying World Championships Team has been announced. Two Steamboat Springs skiers are on it. They are Erik Belshaw and Jason Colby. The competition is next week in Oberstdorf, Germany.

The Steamboat Sailors Girls Basketball team has a 7 p.m. home game tonight against Battle Mountain High School.
The SoRoCo Boys and Girls Wrestling teams have a match against Eagle Valley and North Park at 5 p.m. tonight. It’s Parents Night, too.
