A grass fire was quickly put out by some people driving by on 1st Street in Craig Wednesday. It started near the old outdoor movie theater. Craig Fire Rescue Chief Chris Mercer says it’s possible someone was doing some work on a culvert near the road.
“Mostly just want to remind everyone that with the lack of snow cover, the dead grass from last year is going to present as a fire hazard. Unfortunately, if we don’t get any significant moisture, it’s only going to get worse into the summer months.”
Chief Mercer says the fire in Craig was mostly out when Craig Fire Rescue got there because a few people stopped and helped put it out with fire extinguishers.
Chief Mercer says ranchers should be aware when burning ditches in the next few months. Another reminder is to not throw cigarette butts out of a car window.
“Just something to think of going into the next couple months, if we don’t get any snow or significant amount of rain, it could be super dry.”
