Steamboat Resort and the 10th Mountain Division Foundation are presenting the first-ever 90-Pound Rucksack Challenge. It’s an uphill ski mountaineering event honoring the soldiers of the U.S. Army’s 10th Mountain Division, and the influence they had on winter sports and mountain culture. Registration starts at 3:30 p.m. and the event starts at 5 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 18, at the base of Steamboat Resort. This is also the anniversary of the ascent of Riva Ridge, a famous nighttime attack during World War II. About 700 soldiers scaled the 1,600-foot cliffs of Riva Ridge in the Apennine Mountains of Italy, which the Germans said was impossible.

There will be two divisions in the competition. Competitors in the Rucksack Division have to carry a 90-pound weighted pack, symbolizing the load soldiers carried in battle. The Light Division is for those who want to climb without carrying the extra weight.
