Historic Steamboat Lift Chairs and Gondola Cabins to Be Auctioned
STEAMBOAT SPRINGS, CO- May 20, 2022—Steamboat Ski Resort continues to move full steam ahead with the second phase of a multi-year, multi-million-dollar resort transformation. The project scope this summer includes removal of the Preview and Christie III chairlifts. Chairs from Christie III, a select number of cabins from the Gondola originally installed in 1986, and a one-of-a-kind medical gondola cabin will also be available to the public in an online auction.
Greenhorn Ranch, the resorts new learning area opening winter 2022/23, will include a beginner chairlift along with several magic carpets, removing the need for the Preview lift at the base and making way for the lower terminal of the new Wild Blue gondola. The chairs from the Preview lift were sold internally to employees earlier in May. Christie III was installed in 1979 to improve uphill capacity. With the introduction of Christie Peak Express lift in 2007, Christie III has run minimally over the past few seasons. Due to the fact that this is one of the older lifts at the resort and replacement parts are difficult to source, paired with new out-of-base capacity provided by Wild Blue, the lift will be removed beginning the last week in May. The chairs from Christie III are unique in that they have foam armrests and a padded back. The medical cabin was introduced to the resort when the gondola was installed in 1986 and is in pristine condition as it was used minimally by Steamboat Ski Patrol and has been kept inside.
An online auction will take place beginning at 8 a.m. MDT on May 23 and run through 8 p.m. MDT on May 29. All chairs and gondola cabins awarded through the auction must be picked up in person on June 11 in the Meadows parking lot from 9 a.m. to noon. Chairs cannot be stored beyond this time frame, delivered, or shipped- no exceptions. Specific chair and cabin dimensions will be listed on the auction item description to determine vehicle pick up requirements. Funds raised from the auction will be distributed to the resorts Charitable and Environmental Funds at the Yampa Valley Community Foundation. As a result of a similar online auction held last fall, the resort was able to donate over $200,000 from the sale of the Priest Creek lift chairs to local non-profits and environmental organizations in the community.
More information on the auction will be available at www.steamboat.com/things-to-do/events/chair-auction.
