A calf was violently killed on the Gittleson Ranch in Jackson County overnight Sunday, possibly Monday morning. They say it’s wolves, like the three other cows that they have lost because of wolves that live in a den near their ranch. Dave Gittleson owned the calf.
Gittleson says Colorado Parks and Wildlife came out to the ranch Monday. They will investigate the carcass to confirm it was a wolf kill. He says there were other signs confirming the kill.
Gittleson will submit the claim for the loss. A group called Working Circle was on the ranch. They watch the pastures overnight to alert the rancher if wolves come onto the property. Dave Gittleson says, they missed this one.
Memorial Day ceremonies continued across the Yampa Valley Monday. At the Steamboat Springs Cemetery, snowy and cold weather didn’t keep the VFW and American Legion from honoring and remembering the sacrifices made by local veterans in the service of our country.
One of those Steamboat veterans honored was Robert Grippa who served with the Marine Corps in Vietnam. Grippa will be 81 years old in July.
Michael McCuistion is 85 years old and was a Lieutenant Colonel in the Air Force. The part-time Steamboat resident was also a POW in Vietnam.
This was the 100th year of the Memorial Day tradition at the cemetery in Steamboat Springs where 304 veterans are buried. Local Boy Scouts and Girl Scouts also participated along with cadets from the Civil Air Patrol Squadron.
In COVID numbers, Routt County is reporting 31 new cases of COVID since last Friday. Moffat County has had five new COVID cases since Friday.
It’s the last week of school for Soroco and Steamboat. The Rams in Oak Creek finish the school year up on Thursday while the last day for the Steamboat Sailors is Friday. Hayden and Moffat County kids are already enjoying their summer vacation.
In Craig tomorrow, they’ll enjoy it even more. The Craig Swimming Complex opens up for the summer. This includes the wave pool and the lap pool, which includes a diving board.
