Registration opens Tuesday, July 15, for all of the events with the Yampa Valley Crane Festival, Aug. 28-31 in Steamboat Springs, Hayden, and Craig. It’s the 14th year for the Crane Festival, which has events and activities for all ages. Some events have limited capacity, which requires registration in advance. Colorado Northwestern Community College is hosting an enrollment day, from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. Friday, Aug. 1, in Craig. Staff will be on hand to help with applications, financial aid, housing, and whatever else is needed. Campus tours and tours of residence halls will be available as well.

Look up in the sky starting Friday morning, as the 15th Annual Moffat County Balloon Festival returns to Loudy Simpson Park in Craig. Launching starts at 6:30 a.m. Friday morning and each day through the weekend, weather permitting. Saturday has more activities all day, including a burrito breakfast, the Memorial Regional Health 5K Color Run, and the Colorado Cruisers car show. The Cardboard Boat Regatta is at 1:30 p.m. and free bingo is at 4 p.m. Both have cash prizes. Live music starts in the afternoon, and runs until the headliner at 7:30 p.m. which is “Still the Same,” a Bob Seger tribute band. The Balloon Glow is right afterwards.
Tether rides are available from 7-10 a.m. and 5-7 p.m. on Saturday for $25 per person.
This year’s festival is dedicated to Tony St. John, who passed away last year and was a driving force behind the annual Moffat County Balloon Festival.

A screening of the movie, Holding Liat, is at 6:30 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 2, at Wildhorse Cinemas. The movie tells the story of Liat Atzili, an Israeli woman taken captive during the Oct. 7 attacks in Israel, and then held in Gaza. The screening will be followed by a facilitated discussion. It’s presented by Har Mishpacha: The Jewish Congregation of Steamboat Springs, and STAND which is Steamboat Team to Disrupt Antisemitism and Discrimination.

Local law enforcement, Routt County Emergency Management, Steamboat Springs Fire Rescue, and Steamboat Springs School District will be doing active assailant response training at Steamboat Springs High School today. There will be lots of law enforcement in the area, but it is TRAINING.

Big Game hunting licenses go on sale at 9 a.m. Tuesday, Aug. 5. These are licenses not sold in the primary and secondary draw, and Colorado Parks and Wildlife reports plenty are still available. It’s called the Leftover List, and a link is on our website, as well as the CPW website. Or call 800-244-5613. Or you can go in person to a local CPW office.

- Limited licenses leftover after the primary and secondary draws for elk, deer, pronghorn and bear.
- Limited elk, deer, pronghorn, and bear licenses that someone drew but surrendered or did not pay for during the secondary draw that took fewer than five resident preference points to draw.
- Limited licenses that were returned for refund/preference point restoration since the opening of the secondary draw but prior to July 30 and took fewer than five resident preference points to draw

Thursday, Aug. 7, is the Touch-A-Truck event, hosted by the City of Steamboat Springs. It’s an outdoor adventure for kids of all ages, that includes emergency vehicles, construction equipment, the Classic Air Medical Helicopter and more. Kids can climb and explore and have fun with all of the equipment. It’s from 10 a.m. to noon in the rodeo grounds parking lot.

Mythology Distillery and the Community Ag Alliance are hosting a kickoff to the Routt County Fair. It is from 4:30-8 p.m. at Mythology on Thursday, Aug. 7. Tickets are $20, and proceeds benefit the Routt County Fair. JR Adams will be performing from 4:30-6:30 p.m. Campfire stories start at 7 p.m. with Todd Hagenbuch and Sarajane Snowden.

Friends of Wilderness is having their 25th Anniversary Celebration. It’s from 4-7 p.m., Thursday, Aug. 7, in Olympian Hall at Howelsen Hill. Friends of Wilderness’s 25th anniversary event celebrates two and a half decades working with its longstanding partner the US Forest Service in protecting nearby wilderness areas. The event is also celebrating the creation of the Elaine & Win Dermody Endowment Fund for their 25 years volunteering and supporting the U.S. Forest Service. The Crane Coloring Contest is open to kids ages 3-18 years old until August 8, 2025. All entries will be displayed and awards will be given out at a special kid’s night at the Yampa Valley Crane Festival on Aug. 26, 2025. The Dinosaur Quarry Exhibit Hall in the town of Dinosaur in western Moffat County will be closed to all visitor access, Sept. 8 through late October. Work is being done on the road, the parking lot, and the sidewalk on the Utah side of the monument. The closure only affects the exhibit hall, also known as the “Wall of Bones.”

Hospice certification training is required for individuals interested in working directly with Hospice patients; the next training for these volunteer roles will be held in early May.

Northwest Colorado Health looking for volunteers
Northwest Colorado Health is seeking community members to join our volunteer team. Volunteers are a vital part of our effort to improve health and quality of life for all Northwest Colorado residents. We have a variety of rewarding roles in Routt and Moffat counties available, and we currently have a specific need for volunteers in Moffat County, as well as bilingual English/Spanish volunteers in either county. Moffat County 4-H is looking for 4-H leaders. They need help with things like leatherwork and woodworking, foods, baking, beekeeping, sewing, and scrapbooking. Reach out to the local 4-H office if you’re interested. 970-824-9180.

The free Grief Resource Center opens on Wednesday, October 2, at St. Paul’s Episcopal Church in Steamboat Springs. Northwest Colorado Health is running it. The Grief Resource Center will be open weekly and staffed by bereavement volunteers from 4-6 p.m. on Wednesdays and from noon to 2 p.m. on Thursdays. Community members can find resources and books to support their grief journey or stop in to connect with caring volunteers. There is a private entrance to the library off the alley behind the church. There is a new exhibit at the Museum of Northwest Colorado in Craig. It’s called “The Graveyard of Buoyant Hopes,” with watercolors and photographs specializing in ghost towns at the Old West. It is a dual media exhibit with the watercolors by Kevin Heaney and the photographs by Lee Silliman. The museum is on Yampa Ave. in Craig.

Community grief support groups are available in Steamboat Springs at the Heart of Steamboat United Methodist Church, in the fireplace room there. This is at 736 Oak Street. They meet from 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. on Tuesdays.
Groups also meet at the Hayden Public Library. That’s from 3-4 pm. on the first and third Monday of each month.
Meetings focus on understanding death and honoring connection with a deceased loved one while making a healthy transition into life without that person. These support groups are free and open to the community. The Craig branch of the Moffat County Library is partnering with local Girl Scouts to offer a special Saturday Story Time. The Girl Scouts will be reading the books at 3:30 p.m. on every third Saturday of the month. This is in addition to regular Story Time every Thursday, which has story time sessions at 10 a.m. and 11:30 a.m. each week.
