The night slalom is tonight with the women at 5:30 p.m. and the men at 6:30 p.m. Races continue throughout the day Saturday. It’s the 24th year for the Murphy Roberts Holiday Classic in Steamboat Springs.

Friday, December 19: Howelsen Hill – Slalom

  • Run 1: Women 1:30 p.m. and Men 2:45 p.m.
  • Run 2: Women 5:30 p.m. and Men 6:45 p.m. – America’s Night Slalom and festivities.

  • Run 1: Women 9 a.m. and Men 12:30 p.m.
  • Run 2: Women 11 a.m. and Men 2:30 p.m.

“This event is a highlight of the year because of the iconic, challenging Howelsen Hill race venue and the amazing fans that gather at the finish to cheer them on. The festive atmosphere and prize money attract the best skiers around, and our local racers love the opportunity to compete with such a strong field on their home hill. This is an incredible opportunity to see high-level ski racing up close and in person,” said Jon Nolting, Chief Operating Officer of Steamboat Springs Winter Sports Club.

Now in its 24th year, the race honors Murphy Roberts, a former SSWSC athlete who passed away unexpectedly in 2016 at 22. The Roberts family offers a generous scholarship fund in memory of their son. The annual Murphy Roberts Scholarship Award is presented at the awards ceremony following the night races on December 20. The $1,000 scholarship is awarded to the athlete who best demonstrates a passion for alpine ski racing while selflessly providing a level of enthusiasm, fun, and team participation, which are the traits exemplified by Murphy.

The event starts at 5:30 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 18, which is also the anniversary of the ascent of Riva Ridge, a famous nighttime attack during World War II. About 700 soldiers scaled the 1,600-foot cliffs of Riva Ridge in the Appennine Mountains of Italy, which the Germans said was impossible.

There will be two divisions in the competition. Competitors in the Rucksack Division have to carry a 90-pound weighted pack, symbolizing the load soldiers carried in battle. The Light Division is for those who want to climb without carrying the extra weight.

The Milner Mall at Apex Waste Solutions’ landfill is offering free shopping if you bring in a food donation to LiftUp of Routt County. It’s a one-for-one offer. Every food item donated gets you one mall item for free.

From Community Recycling Coordinator Alicia Archibald: “This is meeting two needs – getting food to the food bank for people in need, and clearing out the Milner Mall before the snow falls and ruins everything, thus potentially ending up in the landfill.”

The Milner Mall is open from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. Monday through Friday, at 20650 County Road 205. Call first to make an appointment to shop. The number is 970-879-6985.

The Craig branch of the Moffat County Library is partnering with local Girl Scouts to offer a special Saturday Story Time. The Girl Scouts will be reading the books at 3:30 p.m. on every third Saturday of the month. This is in addition to regular Story Time every Thursday, which has story time sessions at 10 a.m. and 11:30 a.m. each week.

The “Partners” organization is looking for some male mentors. This is for Routt and Moffat counties. They have 25 youth on a waitlist and they especially need men to help be a mentor. Applications are at PartnersYouth.org or reach out to Erin@PartnersYouth.org

First and Third Thursdays

Hayden Town Council meets at 7:30 p.m. on the first and third Thursdays of every month, in Hayden Town Hall. You are invited to join.
