Routt County Search and Rescue spent a good part of Wednesday evening searching for a skier, who had been skiing at the ski area but left via an access gate. The call came in for the missing skier around 5:15 p.m. Wednesday night. Twelve members of Search and Rescue helped in the search. The skier came out at Alpine Mountain Ranch around 10:20 p.m. and is OK. The skier lives in Steamboat Springs but is new to the area.
The U.S. Post Office in Steamboat Springs is still short-staffed. Because of that, people aren’t getting their mail, especially on the west end neighborhoods and up 129 towards North Routt. And it has been almost a couple of weeks for some. Jim Boxrud with the corporate office in Denver said he didn’t realize how bad it was until he heard our report and we sent him comments from listeners. It was a few things. The local post office lost a commitment from two contract carriers, some employees are sick, and the snowy weather didn’t help. Boxrud says the corporate office is sending people to Steamboat from around the state to assist with the delivery and prep of mail and packages.
“And then we’ve also sent out a call to all of our offices throughout Colorado, saying ‘Hey, do we have any employees that would like to come up, we’ll put them in a hotel and to just go ahead and assist Steamboat in getting caught up.’”
Two extra workers are here and more are on the way. The Manager of Postal Operations for the state was also in Steamboat this week to assess. Since it is a federal issue, State Senator Dylan Roberts reached out to the offices of U.S. Representative Joe Neguse, and U.S. Senators Hickenlooper and Bennet, who are aware and are working with the U.S. Postal Service to help support solving the problem.
Then the corporate office added again that they have two new emergency contracts out for help and six positions available for hire. They plan to update their website to show more Steamboat openings. Apply here
Sixty years ago today, on Jan. 12, 1963, Steamboat ski area fired up the Christie Lift for the first time. John Fetcher was the general manager of the ski area and Hank Perry was his financial partner. John’s son, Jay, sent us some pictures of that first day. You can see them on our website, along with the page of his dad’s diary. It said it was 50 below and a kid broke his leg. Five lift tickets were purchased and seven comp passes were handed out.
