“Well it’s a total surprise. You don’t join organizations like this to have that kind of recognition. You join these organizations that you have a passion for to hopefully make them better. Hopefully, over the years and through contributions, our groups have grown, it can be anything from the fire department that I joined as a firefighter in 1986, and still fighting fires for the airport in Hayden today. Trying to make a difference. That’s all it is.”

A new grants program is providing needs-based scholarships to high school graduates in Routt and Moffat counties. And it doesn’t matter when you graduated. You just have to have lived in Moffat or Routt counties for at least five years. The grants range from $1,000 to $7,500. Two Steamboat residents started the program and have a $100,000 matching fund available. Go to YampaTuitionGrants.org to apply.
The House Education Committee has passed a bill that will make it easier for teachers who are licensed in other states be able to teach in Colorado. Representative Meghan Lukens is the sponsor of the bill and a former teacher at Steamboat Springs High School.
“We’re working to remove barriers educators face when entering the workforce in Colorado,” said Representative Meghan Lukens, D-Steamboat Springs. “Our bill would streamline the process for teachers who are licensed in another state to obtain a teaching license in Colorado. As a former teacher, I know how important it is to have qualified, dedicated educators in the classroom, and this bill will help Colorado attract more licensed teachers to support our students.”
The Interstate Teacher Mobility Compact passed committee, 9-2. It would create an agreement between Colorado and ten other states when a licensed teacher wants to relocate to one of those states and get their teacher’s license.
Steamboat Springs Police have promoted Patrol Officers Braxton Shirley and Christian Barnett to Police Corporals. Officer Sierra Weld moves into a detective position. Press release from the City of Steamboat Springs
