Steamboat Resort will stay open an extra week, through April 16. Steamboat Resort leads Colorado in snow, with back-to-back months with 100 inches of snow (December and January). Staying open longer hasn’t happened much. There was a single-day extension in 2007 and a week extension in 1993.
STEAMBOAT RESORT EXTENDS SEASON
Today is Presidents Day. County, state, and federal offices are closed, like banks and the post office. The floors in the Steamboat Springs Post Office are being cleaned and waxed again starting this afternoon so the lobby will be closed until early Tuesday morning.
The USPS Corporate office out of Denver says all mail is current on every route in Steamboat Springs and Routt County. The Alpenglow Village cluster box, that has been inactive since summer of 2020, will be serviced soon so residents there no longer have to pay for a P.O. Box. That’s behind Walgreens. Postal officials apologized and say they’re working to make things right. They’re also still evaluating why residents here have to pay for a P.O. Box when there is no other way to get their mail, adding, “This will take time,” and they’ll let us know.
There is a Career Fair from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. this Saturday at the Steamboat Springs Post Office. It is a multi-location Mountain Towns Hiring Event.
STEAMBOAT SPRINGS POST OFFICE UPDATE FOR FRIDAY, FEB. 17
Colorado State Patrol and Colorado Department of Transportation are taking action to remind people to drive the speed limit on I-70 in Glenwood Canyon, especially during snowy winter weather. Driving too fast has contributed to all of the closures in the canyon so far this year. When Glenwood Canyon closes, traffic is typically re-routed through Northwest Colorado, with most of it on Highway 40 through Craig, Hayden, and Steamboat Springs. Also, it’s expensive. About $1 million dollars is lost for every hour that I-70 is closed on the mountain corridor.
This week, CDOT and CSP are lowering the speed limits in Glenwood Canyon. Snow plows will be used to slow traffic. And there will be increased speed enforcement with as many as five extra law enforcement checkpoints.
CDOT is also working on major improvements to secondary routes like Highway 40, because of the extra traffic when Glenwood Canyon closes.
