Part of Sunlight Apartments by Elk River Road and Hwy 40 were evacuated by Steamboat Springs Police last Tuesday afternoon, after a gunshot. A bullet went through the inside of an apartment door, across the hallway, and then through another person’s front door and into their apartment. Steamboat Police cleared all nearby units and then arrested 34-year-old Coulter Somes without incident. He is charged with Illegal Discharge of a Firearm which is a felony, and two misdemeanors which are Prohibited use of Weapons while under the Influence, and Reckless Endangerment. Somes has a court date on March 21 for an Appearance on Bond.

This is a picture from Feb. 20 of the moose that was hit and died over the weekiend.
Another moose had to be euthanized by Steamboat Springs Police over the weekend. The young moose was hit by a Toyota Tacoma truck at Tamarack and Kelhi at 9:30 p.m. Saturday night. It fell in the roadway and then was hit by another vehicle, which stopped on top of the moose. Steamboat Springs Police were called and had to euthanize the young moose. Neighbors in the area now say the mother is still there, wandering around, and not wanting to leave the area.

Rachael Gonzalez with Colorado Parks and Wildlife says this is a good reminder for people to slow down.
“Animals right now are using those roadways to travel because it’s easier for them to travel. They’re trying to conserve that energy as we get through these last couple of months of winter time. Again, just paying attention, especially at dawn and dusk.”
Daylight Savings Time is also affecting wildlife.

The Steamboat Sailors Boys Lacrosse team starts the season today, with an away game at Summit High School in Breckenridge. It’s the first year for Head Coach Brian Rodgers. He says there are a lot of multi-sport, Varsity level players with experience. He says he wants the team to make it to the CHSAA State Playoffs this season.
“And everyone is well aware that to get there, we’re going to have to really be great together as a team. We’ll have to concentrate on being great not necessarily as players, but as teammates, student-athletes here at Steamboat, as members of the community and I think everyone on the team really understands that if we can focus on being great that way, the winning will take care of itself.”
There are nine Sailor Seniors on the team. Tuesday’s away game is at 4 p.m. for the boys. Then on Thursday, March 16, there’s a home lacrosse game at 4 p.m. against Mullen at Gardner Field. Listen to that game on KTYV 105.7 Sports on FM.
