Jury selection begins today in the trial of Jessica Stahl starts today in Douglas County. Stahl is accused of the vehicular homicide DUI death of Lacey Lewis from Steamboat Springs last summer in Parker, Colorado. Stahl has multiple charges in the death of Lewis. The district attorney on the case says urine results showed Stahl had 11 drugs in her system at the time of the vehicular homicide. She had gotten out on bond but she then tested positive for fentanyl so she was put back in jail in January. The trial is expected to last four days.

In news from the Moffat County School District…
The district has received just over $203,000 ($203,400) from the School Health Professional Grant. The district will match the money for the next three years to focus on providing staffing and assistance for the mental health effects from substance use and abuse.
The Moffat County School District is starting the Bulldog Academy, which is an alternative way to get an education, for kids virtually and in-person. Details will come out next month.
The school district is offering summer school and credit recovery opportunities starting in June. Reach out to your school for details.
The annual Recycling Fundraiser brought in 86 tons of scrap metal waste to Axis Steel, with Maybell taking the lead and collecting the most, at 28 tons.
The Moffat County School District Activities Council has determined that Girls Wrestling will be officially added, with their own head coach, instead of falling under the umbrella of the boys wrestling program.
Boys and Girls swimming will be dropped from the Moffat County School District because of some criteria that was not met. There is no longer a lap pool for training in Moffat County. The following criteria will be considered prior to the dropping of an inter-scholastic sport:
1. Student participation declines to an unsatisfactory level.
2. The sport is no longer sanctioned by CHSAA.
3. Securing qualified coaches becomes impossible.
4. Adequate facilities and resources no longer exist.
5. Scheduling of contests at the local or regional level becomes impossible.
The Steamboat Springs School District Board of Education meets at 4:30 p.m. today at Steamboat Springs Middle School. One agenda item is an update on the Piknik Theatre Amphitheater at Strawberry Park Elementary. A workshop is scheduled to discuss affordable housing.
Keep an eye on the Sandhill Crane Nest Camera. The egg, or is it eggs?, is about to hatch. Rocky and Athena, as they are affectionately named, laid their first egg on April 26. There might be a second egg. The hatching is expected to occur any time today through Wednesday. One recent problem for the pair is they have had to build their nest higher because of rising water in the area.
Colorado Governor Jared Polis has appointed Laura Smith of Meeker to the Colorado Coroners Standards and Training Board. Smith serves as a coroner of a county with a population of less than 15,000.
Steamboat Springs Fire Rescue spent some time Sunday working on swift water rescues in the Yampa River. They were next to the bridge on 13th Street by the library.
Thank you to all who helped with Routt County clean-up day. Trash bags were lined up all along Hwy 40, ready for pickup.
The Yampa Community Task Force is having a community informational meeting. It’s at 6 p.m. Monday, May 22, in the Ladies Aid Hall on 1st Street in Yampa.
