A firefighting helicopter is staged at Yampa Valley Regional Airport, ready to go, if necessary. The Colorado Division of Fire Prevention & Control (DFPC) has contracted with HeliQwest International Inc. to have the helicopter in Hayden for the next 120 days, ready for any statewide fire response.

A helicopter is taking concrete up to the top of Sundown and Sunshine at Steamboat Resort today. It’s for the Wild Blue Gondola. Access to the top of Thunderhead may not be possible.
The Yampa Valley Airport Commission is looking for commission members. Both must be Routt County residents and one must be active in the aviation industry. Colorado Parks and Wildlife has been granted $11,500 to purchase a new thermal drone. It’s to help better manage wildlife in the northwest region of Colorado. The money comes from a grant from GOCO, which is Great Outdoors Colorado.

The Moffat County Fairgrounds is hosting a Wild Horse Adoption. These are horses from the Piceance East Douglas Herd Management Area. Here’s Elijah Waters who is the Northwest District Manager for the Bureau of Land Management in Colorado.
“These are local horses and we are just really making an effort to get them out into the local community, in Rio Blanco, Moffat, and Routt counties. Since these horses were kind of born and raised in Northwest Colorado, we should have an adoption event in Northwest Colorado.”
There are about 35 horses. The minimum bid is $125. Public Viewing is Friday afternoon and Saturday morning with bids starting at 10 a.m. Saturday. Bidders must be present on site, at the Moffat County Fairgrounds.

Blood donors are needed for a two-day community blood drive in Craig. It’s next Tuesday and Wednesday, June 20-21. Vitalant says it is important to prevent a summer blood shortage. The blood drive is in the Pavilion at the Moffat County Fairgrounds. A link to sign up is on our website and Facebook page.

BLOOD DRIVES ARE SCHEDULED FOR MOFFAT COUNTY June 20-21
Friday is Match Day for free e-bikes going to low-income residents in Moffat and Routt counties. Routt County Riders received a grant for $129,000 from the Colorado Energy office to provide the bikes for those who need them. They have been working with Pedego to fill the orders. Local agencies in both counties have recommended low-income recipients who need an e-bike for transportation. Those agencies are:
- Routt County Department of Human Services
- Moffat County Department of Human Services
- Integrated Community
- Lift Up of Routt County
- Yampa Valley Housing Authority

Post office update Wednesday, June 15… The manager of USPS Strategic Communications for the WestPac (Western-Pacific) region, David Rupert, responded Tuesday to our request of WHEN Steamboat Springs residents will know about not having to pay for a P.O. Box any more, when they have no way to get service. David Rupert writes, “As we’ve previously relayed, there is a process to determine eligibility for each of the 7,062 Steamboat Springs Post Office Boxes. That analysis is active and ongoing.” But he added, “You will be the very first person we tell when it’s complete.” As always, I’ll keep you updated.

FREE P.O. BOXES AND A REFUND? IT’S HAPPENING OTHER PLACES
Veterans can get some help filing a claim on Friday. State and local Veteran’s Service Officers will be on site at the telehealth clinic at Centennial Mall in Craig. They’ll be there from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Friday to answer questions about filing a claim, or enrolling in the VA.
Steamboat Springs Winter Sports Club has announced Alex Deibold will join the team as Snowboard Program Director. Deibold was a bronze medalist in snowboardcross at the 2014 Sochi Olympics. Deibold replaces Maddy Shaffrick who is now coaching with the U.S. Ski & Snowboard Pro Halfpipe team. Diebold moves to Steamboat with his wife and daughter and starts with Winter Sports Club on July 1.
Friends of Natural History is hosting a Chamber mixer in Craig. It’s from 5-7 p.m. Thursday, June 15, and it is now being held on the north side of Colorado Northwestern Community College in Craig. All are welcome.
