Routt County Commissioners Proclaim August
Child Support Awareness Month
Steamboat Springs, CO, August 8, 2023 – Cora Wagoner, Katie Grobe, and Adriana Campos, all members of the Child Support Services Unit of Routt County Department of Human Services, presented to the County Commissioners and requested that the Commissioners proclaim August 2023 Child Support Awareness Month.
Cora Wagoner, Child Support Services Supervisor, reported “thirty-seven percent of children have at least one parent outside the home. Sixty percent of those children participate in the child support program. This is more than 1 in 5 children in the U.S receiving child support services. Research shows that receiving support has a direct impact on families such as regular financial support is associated with better school outcomes for children with higher grades, less school problems, and more likely to finish high school. Receiving child support also directly reduces the risk of child maltreatment and involvement with child welfare and lifts families out of poverty and reduces the need for public assistance.”
The Routt County Child Support Services Unit assists more than 340 families each year, and collected more than $2.1 million for families in 2022.
Last month, Routt County Child Support Services Unit was recognized at the Colorado Family Support Council for their outstanding performance. Routt County was one of six counties, out of the 64 counties in Colorado, to meet all four federal Performance Measures for 2022, ensuring our community’s needs are met with the highest quality of service. In addition, Lynaia South, Assistant County Attorney, was recognized with the Outstanding IV-D Attorney award for her support of the Child Support Services Unit.
“We have an amazing team here in Routt County,” says Cora Wagoner.
Routt County Commissioners congratulated the Child Support Services Unit for their recent awards and unanimously agreed to join local, state and national organizations in proclaiming August 2023 as Child Support Awareness Month. Recognizing that Colorado’s children need the emotional and financial support of both parents; as well as the support of parents, extended families, and the community to help children grow into secure and healthy adults..
