Register your pet with the City of Steamboat Springs. It’s a law that all dogs and cats in the city and within Routt County have to be licensed every year and that license has to be on your pet’s collar. That goes for pigs and goats within city limits. Licenses expire Monday, and you have to renew by Feb. 1, at your local veterinarian’s office or Routt County Humane Society. It’s $5 for altered animals and $25 for those that aren’t. And you have to provide proof of rabies vaccination. Residents within the city limits of Hayden, Oak Creek and Yampa require their own city license. Check with town halls in each location for additional information.
Press release from the City of Steamboat Springs; Dec. 27, 2023.
New Year Equals New Pet License
Off Leash Areas Often Different in Winter vs Summer
STEAMBOAT SPRINGS, COLORADO-December 27, 2023-All dogs and cats located in the City of Steamboat Springs and within Routt County are required by law to be licensed yearly. In addition, pigs and goats within city limits also require a license. All licenses from 2023 expire December 31, 2023, and the next year’s license must be purchased by February 1, 2024.
Dog and cat licenses can be purchased at Routt County Humane Society, 760 Critter Court, or at your own local Steamboat Springs veterinarian office. Licenses for goats and pigs are sold through the Humane Society only.
The price for the dog/cat license is $5 for altered animals or $25 for unaltered animals. The goat/pig license is also $5. To purchase a license, pet owners will need to provide proof of a current rabies vaccination (certificate and not the metal tag) for dogs and cats.
Residents within the city limits of Hayden, Oak Creek and Yampa require their own city license. Check with town halls in each location for additional information.
Keep in mind, if you lose your 2024 license after purchasing it for this year, a replacement tag will cost $2, but is only available from the Routt County Humane Society shelter with proof of rabies vaccination.
It’s required by law that all dogs and cats wear the current license on their collar or harness. This is especially important when using the designated off-leash dog parks (Rita Valentine & Spring Creek Park at the Lower Pond only) or off-leash areas (Butcherknife, Sailors Way and Whistler Park) for off-leash activities. These off-leash areas see seasonal changes and their current usage is outlined below:
Butcherknife | Sailors Way |
This trail carries restrictions during school hours where the leash law applies from 7:30am to 8:30am and 3pm to 4:30pm from Aug 21 to June 8. | The off-leash trail runs directly behind the Steamboat Springs High School. Outside of designated hours, dogs are always to be leashed. |
Whistler Park
This area has three designated areas with the park for off leash activities.
