Turn in your ballots for the Presidential Primary. They are due tomorrow, Tuesday, March 5. Postmarks do not count, so you will have to drop it off at a secure dropbox by 7 p.m. on Tuesday.
IMPORTANT ELECTION DATES FOR THE MARCH 5TH PRESIDENTIAL PRIMARY
Special Election Ballots will be mailed today to all active voters within the City of Steamboat Springs. Voters will decide whether to reject or support the Brown Ranch annexation agreement ordinance passed by City Council. Election day for the Special Election is Tuesday, March 26. Ballots can be returned in the 24-hour secure ballot drop box behind the Routt County Historic Courthouse in downtown Steamboat Springs. It’s in the alley behind the building.
From the City of Steamboat Springs: During the Special Mail Ballot Election, voter services will be available from city offices at 124 10th Street from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., weekdays from March 18-25 and then from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. on Election Day, March 26. Services include voter registration assistance, disabled access voting assistance, ballots for newly registered voters, and replacement ballots. The City Hall main entrance is accessible from 10th Street with parking in the parking lot north of Oak/10th Streets as well as along Oak and on adjacent streets. A handful of close-in parking spaces behind the City Hall can be accessed from the alley between 9th & 10th Streets.
The special election is asking electors of the City of Steamboat Springs the following question:
“Shall the City of Steamboat Springs (“City”) adopt Ordinance No. 2933 to annex approximately four hundred twenty acres of real property owned by the Yampa Valley Housing Authority (“YVHA”) and known as Brown Ranch for the purpose of developing affordable and attainable housing in accordance with the terms and conditions of the Annexation Agreement between the City and YVHA dated Oct. 17, 2023?
The Steamboat Springs School District Board of Education meets Monday afternoon. One agenda item is regarding Brown Ranch. The two groups representing both sides will each have ten minutes to present why they are in favor or why they are against Brown Ranch. From the School District — The Steamboat Springs School District Board of Education will hold a business meeting on Monday, March 4, 2024 at 4:30 p.m. at Steamboat Springs Middle School, 39610 Amethyst Dr. Reports and Communications will include SSSD Celebrations, a Citizens for a Better Plan Community Presentation, and a House our Community Presentation. The meeting will be held in person and will also be livestreamed on the District website. If you would like to participate in public comment, you will need to attend the meeting in person and sign up to speak.

Northern Colorado communities are working on forming the Mountain Rail Coalition (MRC). The communities of Routt County, City of Steamboat Springs, Steamboat Ski & Resort Corporation, Town of Hayden, Craig Chamber of Commerce, Yampa Valley Community Foundation, Winter Park Ski Resort and the town of Winter Park are working on creating a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) to start the formation of the group, which would encourage mountain rail in the mountains of northwest Colorado. There is also support on the federal and state level to invest in passenger rail.

The Steamboat Grand Hotel is shutting down for eight months, starting April 1. Water pipes will be replaced and some basic remodeling done. Steamboat Resort is trying to re-employ staff at the mountain, during the closure.
Fishing licenses for the 2024-2025 season are now on sale. This is for annual, daily, and multi-day fishing licenses. Colorado Parks and Wildlife says the annual license is good through March 31 of next year. Fishing licenses can be purchased online or through any local CPW office.

The 2024 NCAA Nordic and Alpine Ski Championships are in Steamboat Springs this week (March 5-9). The host team is the University of Colorado. Local hosts include the City of Steamboat Springs, Steamboat Resort, and the Steamboat Springs Winter Sports Club.
The NCAA Men’s and Women’s Skiing Committee has chosen 74 men and 74 women to compete in both disciplines, at both Steamboat Resort and Howelsen Hill.
Four Steamboat Springs athletes have been chosen to compete. They are:
- Trey Seymour, University of Denver (Alpine – West Region)
- Elsie Halvorsen, Harvard University (Alpine – East Region)
- Bode Flanigan, Boston College (Alpine – East Region)
- Hannah Soria, Colby College (Alpine – East Region)
Alpine races kick off Tuesday, March 5, at the base of Steamboat Resort, with men’s and women’s Giant Slalom racing beginning the next day.
Howelsen Hill hosts a 7.5K race on Thursday, a night slalom on Friday, and a 20K mass start classic race on Saturday.
This is the ninth time that Steamboat Springs has hosted the NCAA Ski Championships. About 148 skiers from 20 to 25 schools nationwide will be in Steamboat Springs to compete for the title of NCAA Champion.

2024 NCAA skiing championship field announced
Eight Steamboat Springs Winter Sports Club athletes are competing at the U18 Alpine National Championships in Jackson, Wyoming this week. They are: Adrian Beauregard, Caman Beauregard, Curtis Zanni, Kahlen White, Hazel Fernley, Mollie McTigue, Noelle Roth and Katharina Cosby.
