The South Routt School District has announced that Ashley Johnston will be the new principal for South Routt Elementary School in Yampa, for the upcoming academic school year. Johnston is currently the principal at Sandrock Elementary School in the Moffat County School District. That district sent a statement that they will miss Mrs. Johnston and they are sad to see her go. She will finish out the school year and work through the end of June. The district will post the principal position as soon as possible.

The City of Steamboat Springs has announced that Tasha Murphy has been hired as the new Human Resources & Risk Director. She’ll oversee recruitment and retention of employees as well as compensation and benefits, performance management, training and development, legal compliance and risk management. The HR Department for the City of Steamboat Springs supports more than 250 full-time employees and up to 400 part-time, seasonal and temporary employees.

Noxious weed spraying has started on the west side of Steamboat Springs and is moving east through the city. SaveATree is spraying for weeds, including whitetop plants, in the city’s right-of-way. It takes a couple of hours for the spray to dry. Children and pets should avoid sprayed areas for 24 hours.

The 3,000 or so sheep from the Theos Swallow Fork Ranch are on the move. They’re scheduled to get to Highway 13 and on through Meeker on Saturday, May 4. They ask for patience with the sheep, herders, horses and dogs.

Colorado Mountain College in Steamboat Springs is hosting graduation ceremonies. Friday at 3 p.m. is the pinning and commencement for nursing students in Albright Auditorium on campus. Saturday’s ceremony is at 10:30 a.m. at Strings Music Pavilion. Former professional snowboarder turned street artist Pat Milbery is the keynote speaker.
The Yampa Valley Singers present their spring concert called, “Gifts of Spring.” Enjoy the singers and musicians at 7 p.m. Friday, May 3, and 4 p.m. Saturday, May 4. The concert is at the Heart of Steamboat United Methodist Church at 8th and Oak. Tickets are $10 from any singers and at the door until sold out. The Girl Scouts in Steamboat Springs are inviting families to find out about new troops and opportunities for local Girl Scouts in kindergarten to third grade. Derby Day is Saturday afternoon, May 4, at Timber and Torch at the base of Steamboat Resort. Dress in your best Kentucky Derby Day attire and watch the race. Join Connections 4 Kids and other non-profits for a free family event in Craig. The fun is from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Centennial Mall on Saturday, May 4.
Maybell Heritage Days are May 4-5. The “Where the Hell’s Maybell” Bike Ride is Saturday from Craig. It’s a 30-mile bicycle trek from Craig to Maybell. Go at your own speed and enjoy the scenery. And then Bear River Young Life will have breakfast available in Maybell Park when you arrive.
Then the Sombrero Ranch Great American Horse Drive is Sunday, May 5, through downtown Maybell. The horses will come through downtown Maybell any time between 8-10 a.m. There will be live music and local vendors in Maybell Park. A Women’s High Tea is Sunday afternoon in Oak Creek. It’s presented by the Historical Society of Oak Creek and Phippsburg. The guest speaker is Arianthe Stettner, and the theme is “History Lives Here.” Stettner will also speak on the arborglyphs, which are the carvings in the Quaky trees the sheepherders have done through the years. The event is free but donations are welcome. It’s from 1:30-4 p.m. at SoRoCo High School in Oak Creek. For more information, call 970-736-8245.

The Sailors Boys Lacrosse Team faces off today against Battle Mountain High School in Edwards at 5:30 p.m. Listen on KTYV 105.7 Sports on FM.
The Girls Lacrosse team is at home against Battle Mountain at 5:30 p.m. Friday night. And it’s Senior Night. Liz Diefendorf is the head coach.
“We have 15 seniors to lead the way who have been with the program a long time.”
The Steamboat Springs Track and Field team is at the Western Slope League Championships in Meeker Friday and Saturday.
The Sailors baseball team has a doubleheader at 11 a.m. Saturday, at home, against Battle Mountain.
The Moffat County, Soroco and Hayden Track and Field teams are competing at regionals in Grand Junction.

“One of our big goals is to get as many relay teams to qualify for state, and then if we can get individuals to qualify as well then that is always a bonus on top of that.”
In another bowling honor… 14-year-old Alex Velardo of Craig will be bowling in the upcoming Junior Gold Championship in Detroit, Michigan. This is a national tournament for youth bowlers held every July. He is one of 20 youth bowlers attending from Colorado. Velardo is a freshman in Craig, who studies online.
