It is now looking like it WAS a mountain lion that killed the collared wolf, which was found on April 18 in Larimer County. U.S. Fish and Wildlife has completed the initial necropsy. The report says the cause of death is trauma, consistent with predation. “Although not definitive, the puncture wounds in the skull are consistent with those typically inflicted by a mountain lion.” The wolf that was killed is one of the wolves that was reintroduced in Colorado last December.
Road work is happening through early October to create a passing lane on Highway 40, between Kremmling and Steamboat Springs. It’s just north of Wolford Mountain Reservoir. Delays could be up to 20 minutes. Work won’t be done over a holiday weekend. Normal working hours are 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. Monday through Thursday, and 7 a.m. to noon on Fridays.
The 8th Street closure at Tucker Street in Craig has been extended through May 24. It’s because of the weather. Reach out to the City of Craig Road & Bridge Shop (970-824-4463), if you have any questions.
The Bureau of Land Management has been doing some controlled burns. Tuesday’s burn was northwest of Sunbeam, where they had to reduce the density of cattails in the Oxbow Wildlife Area, which is a waterfowl and migratory bird habitat.
The grand re-opening for the Hayden Center is at 5 p.m. Wednesday, May 15. There will be music and refreshments and free dance classes with Scott Goodhart and a free painting class. Fitness classes will be free all day as well. Stop by and check out the fun.
The Yampa Town Board meets at 6 p.m. tonight. Asphalt repair at the intersections of 3rd and 5th Streets near South Routt Elementary will be reviewed and discussed.
Volunteers are needed to help plant trees in the area of the Muddy Slide Fire on Lynx Pass. The Climate Crew with Yampa Valley Sustainability Council is partnering with the U.S. Forest Service to re-plant six acres of Lodgepole Pine Trees on three different days, starting this Saturday. It will help start with the re-growth of the forest. Two more planting days are May 22 and May 23. The Steamboat Sailors Boys Lacrosse team had a heartbreaking loss Tuesday night in the state playoffs, to the Air Academy, who came from behind and scored the winning goal in the last second of the game. Lowen Epstein and Brian Harvey were doing the play-by-play.
