Another fraud alert has been issued. This one from the Routt County Sheriff’s Office because of multiple fake phone calls from scammers impersonating local sheriff deputies. They say there is a warrant out for your arrest and you have to pay or you’ll be arrested. Here’s Routt County Sheriff Doug Scherar.
“These types of scams are very common. The Sheriff’s Office or law enforcement in general will not call people and ask for money over the phone. If you believe, it is a scam, call into dispatch and talk to a deputy.”
The Sheriff’s Office or any local law enforcement will never ask for money or gift cards or credit cards over the phone.

Fraudulent Calls Impersonating Local Sheriff Deputy
Steamboat Springs, CO, August 21, 2023 –Routt County Sheriff’s Office has received multiple calls for service for fraudulent phone calls to people in Routt County. The suspect(s) are calling residents and falsely impersonating a local Sheriff Deputy. They then successfully scam the victims out of money claiming that the victim had warrants for their arrest and advised them to either pay the fees or be arrested for Federal warrants. These calls are also happening in other Counties.
Routt County Sheriff’s Office (RCSO) does not investigate Federal warrants. RCSO does not call and request money or personal information on any crime over the phone. Other Law Enforcement agencies also do not. We will never solicit gift cards as payment and we do not accept credit cards over the phone.
Impersonating a peace officer is a felony. If you are unsure if a real law enforcement officer is calling you hang up and call 911 to speak to an officer on duty.
If you have any information about these fraudulent calls please call Routt County Communications to report it (970) 879-1090.
