A new 25-year lease has been signed with Union Pacific by Governor Polis for the State of Colorado. It is a new lease agreement for Colorado’s Moffat Tunnel, which replaces the original 1926 lease. It will allow continued freight operations through the Moffat Tunnel and possibly establish passenger rail access from Denver, to Winter Park, and on to Steamboat Springs and Craig.
The first phase would be re-establish passenger rail from Denver to Granby, and then future phases would connect eventually through to Craig.

Routt County Riders had their first trail work day of the summer season on the Rotary Loop Trail this weekend. A record number of volunteers showed up to help clear brush off of the trail, which is a popular trail used by hikers and bikers. Lucy Winslow is the programs and events coordinator with Routt County Riders.
“The BLM (Bureau of Land Management) contracted some crews to come do some very important fire mitigation work. Unfortunately, there’s some stuff left over that is in the trail and causing it to be not fun to ride and unsafe for trail users.”
The Routt County Riders worked on clearing that brush out of the trial and then on widening the trail to make it more accessible for ADA standards so those with disabilities can also use it.
- The next trail work day is also on the Rotary Trail on May 18.
- Also, Wednesday is National Bike & Roll to School Day.
- Routt County Riders will be at the Hayden Middle School for their Street Smarts program on Thursday.
- Then on June 7, there is a public trail work day at Oak Creek Mountain Park.
