STEAMBOAT SPRINGS — Students climbing the stairs inside Colorado Mountain College’s Academic Building are now met with a burst of color.
Through a partnership with CMC Steamboat Springs and Steamboat Creates, a new interior mural by artist Hilary Williams of Revel Painting fills the building’s central stairwell, transforming a heavily used campus corridor into a space that invites a second look.
Titled “Between Peaks and Possibilities,” the large-scale work stretches through the stairwell connecting classrooms, meeting areas and the campus dining hall. Its sweeping, interconnected forms suggest movement and growth — a visual echo of the paths students take through their education.
CMC Steamboat Springs will host a “Meet the Artist” reception from 4-5:30 p.m. on April 10. The public is invited and encouraged to attend.
Expanding art
The mural was commissioned through a public call for artists named “Joy in the Journey,” and designed specifically for the high-traffic stairwell, a space used daily by students, faculty, staff and visitors.
Williams’ abstract style emphasizes motion and connection, with layered shapes that guide the eye upward as people move between floors.
The installation is part of a collaboration between Colorado Mountain College and Steamboat Creates to expand public art on campus and make it more visible in shared spaces.
“This project exemplifies the power of public art to shape how people experience a place,” said Kim Keith, executive director of Steamboat Creates. “Through our partnership with Colorado Mountain College, we’re able to bring high-quality, thought-provoking artwork into everyday environments making creativity visible and accessible to the entire community.”
Williams, founder of Revel Painting, is known for large-scale, expressive works. The mural adds to a growing presence of public art in Steamboat Springs — and offers a moment of color and reflection in the rhythm of a school day.
The “Meet the Artist” reception featuring muralist Hilary Williams will be held from 4-5:30 p.m. on April 10 at CMC Steamboat’s Academic Building, 1275 Crawford Ave. All are invited to attend. Contact Olivia Goldsworthy at 970-870-4407, ogoldsworthy@coloradomtn.edu.
