NOW — Deadline Dec. 8-9 — Gift the Gift of Food this Holiday Season
United Way of the Yampa Valley is collecting $25 food gift cards from City Market and Safeway in Steamboat Springs and City Market or Walmart in Craig. These will be given to families in need on their next grocery trip. These families are nominated by local schools, health and human service organizations and other nonprofits.
- Drop off at 443 Oak Street in Steamboat Springs before Dec. 9.

A group called Steamboat Secret Santas is working to help 888 local recipients this holiday season, make the holidays a bit less stressful, and more magical. There is a QR code on the flyer on how you can help. Or go to SteamboatSecretSantas.com for links on how to be a secret Santa.

Residents of Northwest Colorado are being asked to participate in a community-wide survey on mental and behavioral health. It’s for those who live and/or work in Moffat and Routt counties. It asks about community connections, quality of life, and health needs related to mental health and alcohol use.
The survey is being conducted through Yampa Valley Community Foundation and other local agencies. The online survey is available through February. There will also be 400 phone surveys, so you may get a phone call.

Rocky Mountain Economic Development Partnership wants to hear from you. There is a survey for the Yampa Business Retention & Expansion Study, to see how local businesses do each year, the dynamics, business environment, and more. It’s confidential and anonymous. Those who participate could win a $100 gift card.

Coats from the Coat Drive are now available at LiftUp of Routt County. This is for Routt County residents. Get a coat voucher from the LiftUp Food Bank or a case worker. The coats are available through Nov. 30.

Now through the holidays
LiftUp of Routt County has started a campaign to get 700 turkeys and 700 hams to give to families in Routt County for the upcoming holiday season. Bring your meat donations in to LiftUp, or drop by a donation, in person or online at LiftUp.org Donate and Support LiftUp of Routt County The hams have been donated with a donation from SBNY. Turkeys are still needed.

The Milner Mall at Apex Waste Solutions’ landfill is offering free shopping if you bring in a food donation to LiftUp of Routt County. It’s a one-for-one offer. Every food item donated gets you one mall item for free.
From Community Recycling Coordinator Alicia Archibald: “This is meeting two needs – getting food to the food bank for people in need, and clearing out the Milner Mall before the snow falls and ruins everything, thus potentially ending up in the landfill.”

Nov. 27
The Steamboat Springs 5K Turkey Trot is at 9:30 a.m. Thursday, Thanksgiving Day. This Thanksgiving tradition is open for all runners and walkers. The 5K starts at Steamboat Springs High School and benefits the SSHS Track & Field and Cross Country programs. Dress in cold weather running gear and your best Thanksgiving Day attire. Also, bring a donation to the LiftUp Food bank.

The annual Thanksgiving Community Dinner is from 12:30-4:30 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 27. The Thanksgiving Day dinner is coordinated each year by United Way of the Yampa Valley, with help from local businesses and community members. This is free and all are invited. St. Michael’s Church in Craig is hosting a Community Thanksgiving Dinner. Enjoy a delicious Thanksgiving meal from 2:45-4:30 p.m. Thursday, Thanksgiving Day. Grab-n-Go boxes are also available until five p.m.

Nov. 28
Light Up the Night returns to Steamboat Springs this holiday season. It is at 6 p.m. Friday, Nov. 28, at its new location of Civic Plaza in Steamboat Springs. That’s on 10th Street between Lincoln and Oak. Main Street Steamboat Springs is again coordinating the event, which has moved from the historic Routt County Courthouse to the new Civic Plaza. There will be cookies and cocoa and the famous Ping Pong Ball Drop with specials to redeem all over town. Santa will also be there, in his Santa House.
Santa’s House is set up at Civic Plaza and will stay there through the holidays. Santa’s hours are:

- 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 13
- 10 a.m. to Noon Saturday, Dec. 20 – This is also the day for the Gift of Photography, courtesy local photographer Danielle Zimmerer. She’ll be taking free family photos.

Friday, Feb. 28, is Fresh Air Friday. Colorado Parks and Wildlife offers all visitors and residents to visit a Colorado state park for free. These include:

The Town of Yampa has a Community Giving Tree. Stop by Crossan’s at 101 Main Street and select an ornament with details on a gift purchase. Return the ornament with the unwrapped gift to Crossan’s by Dec. 22.
If you know someone in need this holiday season, fill out a registration slip at Crossan’s. All ages are welcome.

Dec. 1-March 1
The Winter Reading Program at the Moffat County Library branches in Craig, Maybell, and Dinosaur begins today. The theme is the famous Iditarod Sled Dog Race.
All ages can register for free. Kids and teens can pick up racing logs at the library and can earn fun prizes. Adults are also eligible to win a gift basket for every book read. The Winter Reading Progrm runs through March 1.

The Routt County Farm Bureau has their Annual Meeting. Discussion items include the Colorado River Compact Negotiations and the Shoshone Water Right Update with Raquel Flinker, the Director of Interstate and Regional Water Resources for the Colorado River District. The meeting is at 5:30 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 2, in the meeting room at Mountain Valley Bank, 2220 Curve Plaza, in Steamboat Springs.

Dec. 3
Winter Expo 2025 is from 4-5:30 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 3, at the Steamboat Grand. Over 50 Yampa Valley businesses will be there talking about what they have to offer this winter. It’s free, with free food and drinks and giveaways, presented by the Steamboat Springs Chamber.

The Visa Big Air presented by Toyota returns to Steamboat Dec 11–13 as the first qualifying event for the U.S. Freeski and Snowboard Teams. There will be 200 world-class skiers and riders competing from 33 nations. Plus, enjoy a free concert from The Motet at 3:45 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 13, in Steamboat Square.
Then at 5:30 p.m., light up the night with the Balloon Glow.

Wednesday, Feb. 18
Steamboat Resort and the 10th Mountain Division Foundation are presenting the first-ever 90-Pound Rucksack Challenge. It’s an uphill ski mountaineering event honoring the solders of the U.S. Army’s 10th Mountain Division, and the influence they had on winter sports and mountain culture. The event starts at 5:30 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 18, which is also the anniversary of the ascent of Riva Ridge, a famous nighttime attack during World War II. About 700 soldiers scaled the 1,600-foot cliffs of Riva Ridge in the Appennine Mountains of Italy, which the Germans said was impossible.
There will be two divisions in the competition. Competitors in the Rucksack Division have to carry a 90-pound weighted pack, symbolizing the load soldiers carried in battle. The Light Division is for those who want to climb without carrying the extra weight.

The Tread of Pioneers Museum unveils a new exhibit on Wednesday, Oct. 22. “This is Native Art” features the artwork of 26 contemporary Native American artists.
Artist, activist, and author Danielle SeeWalker is the curator of the exhibit which originally opened at the Colorado State Capitol last winter before going to the Golden History Museum.
“We wanted to show that Native art is not frozen in time—it is modern, diverse, and deeply connected to lived experiences today,” said curator SeeWalker.

Northwest Colorado Health looking for volunteers
Northwest Colorado Health is seeking community members to join our volunteer team in Routt and Moffat counties. There is currently a specific need for volunteers in Moffat County, as well as bilingual English/Spanish volunteers in either county. Opportunities include:
- Hospice Volunteers – provide comfort and support to Hospice patients (direct service), or support Hospice families by running errands, cooking meals or assisting with other tasks (indirect service);
- The Haven Assisted Living Volunteers – share a talent or skill with residents in Hayden;
- Event Volunteers – support fundraising events by helping to sell and deliver Hospice Daffodils in the spring or assist with the Rubber Ducky Race for Hospice in the summer/fall.
We welcome volunteers of all ages and backgrounds and will tailor positions to your unique skills, availability and experience. Tuesday nights
Bingo Night is from 6-7:30 p.m. every Tuesday at Mythology Distillery. But first, it’s free music from 5-6 p.m. featuring Jay Roemer. Free to play. Three games per night. Community grief support groups are available in Steamboat Springs at the Heart of Steamboat United Methodist Church, in the fireplace room there. This is at 736 Oak Street. They meet from 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. on Tuesdays.
Groups also meet at the Hayden Public Library. That’s from 3-4 pm. on the first and third Monday of each month.
Meetings focus on understanding death and honoring connection with a deceased loved one while making a healthy transition into life without that person. These support groups are free and open to the community. The Craig branch of the Moffat County Library is partnering with local Girl Scouts to offer a special Saturday Story Time. The Girl Scouts will be reading the books at 3:30 p.m. on every third Saturday of the month. This is in addition to regular Story Time every Thursday, which has story time sessions at 10 a.m. and 11:30 a.m. each week.

The “Partners” organization is looking for some male mentors. This is for Routt and Moffat counties. They have 25 youth on a waitlist and they especially need men to help be a mentor. Applications are at PartnersYouth.org or reach out to Erin@PartnersYouth.org
