13th Street in Steamboat Springs will be closed Friday (Feb. 3) through next Wednesday (Feb. 8). There is a sewer break within the city’s system near the Builders First Source and Steamboat Springs Transit building. The break is near a high-pressure gas line which makes the repair more difficult. No traffic will be allowed on 13th Street. The detour is along Shield Drive and the James Brown Soul Center of the Universe Bridge.
Here are more details from the City of Steamboat Springs; Feb. 2, 2023.
Sewer Break & Repair To Close 13th Street — Break Anticipated to Take Around Five Days to Repair
STEAMBOAT SPRINGS, COLORADO-February 2, 2023-City of Steamboat Springs Water & Utilities crews responded to a sewer break within the city’s system on Tuesday evening on 13th Street adjacent to Builders FirstSource and the Steamboat Springs Transit (SST) facility.
Since that night, crews have been evaluating the issue and worked to develop a plan to complete the repair. The break is located near a high-pressure gas line which makes the repair work much more complicated.
13th Street will be closed to all traffic at the break point starting tomorrow, Friday, February 3 through Wednesday, February 8.
During the closure, no through traffic will be permitted on 13th Street and vehicles will need to detour via Shield Drive and the James Brown Soul Center of the Universe Bridge to reach locations west of the closure.
Due to three to five feet of frost, the ground in the impacted area has to be thawed, which is estimated to take two days before crews can begin digging on Monday. The technical equipment has to be located near the break resulting in the road closure. Repair work is anticipated to take place on Tuesday and backfilling the site on Wednesday.
“Unfortunately, we looked for a way to keep one-lane open on 13th Street, but due to the location of the break that was just not an option,” said Public Works Director Jon Snyder. “Anyone that travels this route including large semi delivery trucks should not rely on direction apps for the next week.”
Some locations, such as the SST Facility are without sewer service at this time and will be until repairs can be made. Businesses in the impacted area may contact the Water & Utilities Department at 970.871.6303 or may reach out directly to Water Distribution Manager Michelle Carr with questions or concerns regarding this situation.
