News of more vehicle thefts are coming in. This time, someone got into six unlocked vehicles in the Silver Spur neighborhood, west of Steamboat Springs sometime overnight Monday. No vehicles were damaged and no forceable entry because Sgt. J.D. Paul with the Routt County Sheriff’s Office says all vehicles were unlocked.
“It’s just imperative that people lock their doors. We are trying to step up our extra patrols in the area at night. That way we have a presence in the area, but unfortunately we can’t be everywhere at once. So people just need to make sure they are locking their doors in their vehicles and their homes. It’s always good to just be safe.”
Sgt. Paul says they don’t know if it is an individual or group of people. The vehicles were either in the driveway or on the street. Steamboat Police have received reports of three more vehicles vandalized in the area of Cherry Drive, for a total of seven now. Again, all were unlocked.

D&D Metal Recycle, along Hwy 40 west of Steamboat Springs, could reopen Dec. 20. The free recycling center was issued a Cease and Desist order by Routt County on Aug. 2, after applying to be a recycling station. It had to get proper permits with deadlines for 29 requirements and it didn’t happen so the county closed the facility. Alan Goldich with the Routt County Planning Commission says progress has been made and that D&D provides a valuable service to the community. The permit could be renewed Dec. 15 and then there is a 5-day appeal period.
Even though D&D clearly has signage that says No Dumping and they are closed, people are continuing to leave old appliances and other large items on the property. That’s illegal. Please don’t anything there until they are able to reopen.
