A man from Casper, Wyoming, has been arrested for allegedly starting three fires near Maybell, with fireworks on Sunday. 22-year-old Kobe Dimick was charged with multiple counts of arson and Driving under the Influence of Alcohol. Dimick did bond out of the Moffat County Jail. The Moffat County Sheriff’s Office also expressed gratitude to Maybell Volunteer Fire, Moffat County Wildland Fire, and BLM Fire Crews for helping get the fire out.

Sheriff Chip McIntyre commended the deputies involved, stating: “The rapid response and thorough investigative work of our deputies played a crucial role in identifying and arresting the suspect responsible for these dangerous and reckless acts. Intentionally or negligently setting fires with fireworks during high fire danger not only endangers lives and property, but also puts our firefighters and first responders at unacceptable risk. We will not tolerate this kind of disregard for public safety in Moffat County.”

The Colorado Parks and Wildlife Commission met Monday to discuss the continued killing of livestock by the Copper Creek Pack of wolves, that was taken from Grand County, put in a sanctuary, then re-released to Pitkin County.

Members of the pack have continued killing with livestock depredations on May 17, 23, 24, and 25. CPW removed one wolf from the pack on May 29.

No action was taken. It was an informational meeting.

Director Jeff Davis said he met with Pitkin County producers who have been affected.

“I’m going to defend these producers all day long. They’re good people doing all of the right things and trying to hang on to hope, folks, but it is getting more and more difficult for them to hang on to that hope. So we’ve got to stick with them and help them to the best of our ability.”

Davis said more action may need to be taken, not only non-lethal but possibly lethal.

Forest health and fuel reduction treatments are starting today on the Beall Trail on Emerald Mountain near Steamboat Springs. The Beall Trail will be temporarily closed beginning today for public and worker safety. Work that is being done includes removing hazardous fuels and trees that could help reduce a catastrophic wildfire, and helping with trail maintenance and public safety. The Bureau of Land Management is working with the Colorado State Forest Service to get the work done, which should last three to four weeks.

The Associated Governments of Northwest Colorado has awarded $50K in ten mini-grants. One goes to Yampa River Corridor Marketing in Craig. Meeker is also receiving a grant for an Economic Development Magazine.

The Steamboat Springs and Ski Town Rotary Clubs are accepting donations to help disaster relief efforts and victims of the Texas floods. Donations are tax deductible through their 501(c)(3) Foundation and can be made at SteamboatRotary.org.

Asher Ben Basat spoke in Steamboat Springs Monday night, to a full house at Wildhorse Cinema. Basat is a survivor of the Holocaust. The evening was presented by the Chabad Jewish Center of Steamboat Springs.

The Moffat County Board of County Commissioners meets Tuesday morning. Reports are from Planning and Zoning, the Assessor’s Office, and from Human Resources on an employment offer for a Veteran Services Officer. Agenda

We have sad news to report about a frequent star of many a Steamboat Springs 4th of July Parade. Larry, the Camel, made his way many a time up and down Lincoln Ave., with owner Bethany Aurin. Sadly, Larry died from a lightning strike on the 4th of July. Bethany says it happened after a blissful afternoon visiting the Cliffview Assisted Living Center in Kremmling. Our thoughts are with Larry’s loved ones.

As for this year’s 4th of July parade, float winners were Colorado Cranes, Steamboat Powersports, Wild West Balloon Adventures, and Perry-Mansfield.

  • Best Original Theme: Colorado Crane Conservation Coalition
  • Best Group: Steamboat Powersports
  • Best Commercial: Wild West Balloon Adventures
  • Best Parade Theme: Perry-Mansfield Performing Arts School & Camp
