Netflix will premiere The Boroughs, a supernatural mystery from the Duffer Brothers (producers of “Stranger Things”) on May 21.

A post on X reads: “Alfred Molina, Geena Davis, Alfre Woodard, Clarke Peters, Denis O’Hare, Bill Pullman. Welcome to THE BOROUGHS. A new supernatural series from the executive producers of STRANGER THINGS. May 21.”

The eight-episode series takes place in a quiet retirement community where a grieving newcomer, Sam Cooper (Alfred Molina), arrives after losing his wife—only to encounter something far more sinister. As strange events unfold, he joins a group of fellow residents to uncover a dangerous secret hidden within their seemingly idyllic surroundings. The ensemble cast includes Alfred Molina, Geena Davis, Alfre Woodard, Clarke Peters, Denis O’Hare, and Bill Pullman, along with Jena Malone, Carlos Miranda, Seth Numrich, Alice Kremelberg, and others.

Created by Jeffrey Addiss and Will Matthews, the series blends horror, mystery, and emotional storytelling. The Duffer Brothers executive produce through Upside Down Pictures, with Hilary Leavitt, while Ben Taylor directs multiple episodes.

Addiss and Matthews shares that “from the beginning, we knew we wanted The Boroughs to feel equal parts scary, mysterious, exciting and emotional. The challenge was to create a world that could hold all of these different tones at once. Which is why it was so fun to work with the Duffer Brothers – the masters of balancing heart and horror.”

The Duffers were drawn to the show’s fresh take on older characters in a genre setting:  “For years, we’ve wondered why no one has made a film like Ron Howard’s wonderful ‘Cocoon’ since, well, ‘Cocoon.’ Then, out of nowhere, Jeff and Will emailed us an idea for ‘The Boroughs:’ a story about retirees and monsters. They were adamant that — unlike so many stories about older characters — this wouldn’t treat aging as a punchline. Instead, it would treat its characters as real people facing real challenges… along with a few supernatural ones. It was exactly the show we’d been dreaming of.”
