Two cases of the Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza have been detected in Moffat County. Moffat County Public Health reports that the Avian Flu is spreading among wild birds and domesticated poultry in Colorado. Never touch any sick or dead birds and report them if you do see a bird like this. There is a form on the Colorado Department of Agriculture website.

Senator Hickenlooper spoke with Steamboat Radio News this week about the post office problems in Steamboat Springs. He and Senator Bennet recently met with U.S. Postmaster Louis DeJoy in Washington D.C. to tell him about the problems at our local post office and in Colorado.

“He gave me the same old tired excuses. You know, ‘We can’t find staff, we can’t keep the staff that we have, a lot of people left after the pandemic, there’s no affordable housing so people can’t afford to live in places like Steamboat and still work for the post office.’ What I said to him, ‘Well then don’t have you a list of what my priorities should be to help you? What more can I do to make sure that you’ve got what you need.” And we never did quite get to that full list of priorities. He said that he’s going to send me a list.”

Deep snow is causing problems in Old Town Steamboat Springs. Stop signs are all visible but some have been hard to see. Street Superintendent David Van Winkle says he watches for any safety issues. The street crews have been actively widening the streets, fixing visibility and drainage issues, and filling potholes.

Steamboat Springs City Manager Gary Suiter says to “drive like a local,” meaning to proceed with caution and be courteous.

Another problem in the downtown neighborhood is parking on city streets overnight. It isn’t allowed during the winter so that snowplows can do their job and keep the streets clear. Steamboat Springs Interim Police Chief Mark Beckett says the city has been focusing on repeat offenders. Two vehicles were towed from Park Ave. on Monday, after they were repeatedly illegally parked on the street overnight.

The City of Steamboat Springs is looking for community members who might be interested in running a Yampa River Ambassador Program in the summer. It would start in mid-May focusing on high water and rafting safety education, and then emphasize tubing in the summer. The program would share information on responsible river recreation and water use. The city is taking Requests for Proposals from those who might be interested. The deadline to apply is March 24.
