A former Steamboat Springs resident is reporting from the front lines of the war in Israel. Nicole Zedeck is an International Correspondent with i24News, which is an Israeli-based 24-hour news channel in Tel Aviv. She was a regular reporter until Saturday, when the war started.

“Even when I was down there today, there still is ongoing action. They told us to be on the lookout because there still are terrorists in Israeli territory right now. However, they wanted us to see exactly what happened in one of these small communities near the southern border, that was completely wiped out. I mean, I saw horrific scenes that is hard to even describe.”

We asked Nicole about her parents, and how they are coping with her reporting from a war zone.

“They definitely are very, very worried for me but they’re also very, very proud. That’s what they keep saying. So it’s difficult for them but they’re proud that I’m giving it the coverage that it deserves because people do need to see what’s happening here.”

Zedeck went to Lowell Whiteman School, and she was a 2017 graduate of Steamboat Mountain School. She was also part of the cheer team for the Steamboat Sailors.

“That’s my home. I’ve moved around a lot since then but whenever anyone asks me, ‘Where are you from?’ I say, ‘Colorado! Steamboat Springs.’”

Zedeck moved to Israel to work for i24News eight months ago. There’s a lot more on this story on our website.

Five new firefighters have been sworn in to Steamboat Springs Fire Rescue. They are Bryan Barry, Derek Diamond, Michael Hall, Angel Ramirez, and Dillon Sanders.

They did 12 weeks of training at the Fire Academy and then 12 weeks of EMS training. Lieutenant Chris Welch helps with that training, and he emphasized the ties to the community.

“These recruits have shown a very large commitment to their community, in serving their community not just as a career and profession, but as serving their family, and taking care of these community members not just for a paycheck but because it’s the right thing to do and they believe in it.”

Nick Fernandez was also honored with a promotion to Firefighter/Engineer.

Steamboat Springs Fire Rescue provides emergency services within the district. Staffed by career firefighters divided into three shifts, which provide emergency coverage 24 hours a day, 365 days a year, the combined fire district is approximately 385 square miles including the 10 square miles that make up the city.

Keenan Hayes of Hayden is a rookie in the Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association. But he’s a really good rookie. He’s leading the world in Bareback Riding, having earned $265,000 so far this season, which is a record for season earnings, and certainly the most a rookie who is 20-years-old has ever won. Hayes grew up in Hayden and Routt County and is appreciative of the support when he comes home.

“Oh, they’re amazing. Come home and see people and everybody wants to talk and congratulate me and it’s really cool seeing how many people actually support it. The community is amazing… Hayden, Craig, Steamboat. All of them. Shoot, I grew up here. Got on my first bucking horse here, actually.”

Hayes will likely be the Bareback Riding Rookie of the Year and could also be the PRCA Rookie of the Year. It will be announced at the National Finals Rodeo in Las Vegas in December where Hayes will be competing for the World Bareback Champion Title, eight seconds at a time.
