Another calf has been killed by wolves, according to Jackson County rancher Don Gittleson. It was on his ranch.
“Yeah, it’s getting old.”
He found the dead calf Saturday afternoon and he thinks it was killed the night before.
Gittleson says Colorado Parks and Wildlife officers did an investigation on the calf today (Sunday, May 26).
“The officer doing the investigation said it was obviously alive before or while they were eating on it but yeah, it will be confirmed.”
Gittleson says it may be two of the collared wolves from Oregon because he says they are now in Jackson County.
He says another calf died from being run to death by the wolves. He’ll turn that in for compensation.
“We have another one that we’re going to turn in that happened a few days before this, that got run to death so we’re going to send it in. They’ll probably deny that one.”
Gittleson is working on moving his herd out of his hay meadow to a higher range. He has lost multiple cows, calves, and yearlings to wolf kills, starting in December of 2021.
We have reached out to CPW to confirm the most recent death. They will post it on their website on the Confirmed Wolf Depredations, once wildlife officers confirm it officially.
Here’s more from Don Gittleson on the timeline of when this all happened.
“Just a couple days ago we had the gray male that’s up here, 2101, go through. I got a picture of him that’s up on the skyline. We saw him Thursday when I was taking my grandson to school early in the morning. And then the tracks today I think are probably from two of the ones from Oregon, I bet. Because we have at least two of the collared wolves from Oregon here now, too. Then the calf, I found it yesterday afternoon, and it was probably killed the day before, during the night. We just finished the investigation on it and they killed it. They were probably eating on before it was even dead.”
This picture is from Don Gittleson, where you can barely see the wolf up on the ridgeline.
