By Shannon Lukens.
Saturday was a gathering of around 70 people on the Gittleson Ranch in Jackson County. This is where wolves have killed more cattle than anywhere else in Colorado.
State legislators were there along with many ranchers and producers from Northwest Colorado, media from throughout Colorado, Routt County Sheriff Doug Scherer, and top officials with Colorado Parks and Wildlife. They were all there to listen and learn how wolf reintroduction is affecting the ag community, in a non-confrontational setting.
Don Gittleson gave a tour of his ranch and home, showing where different cattle had been killed by wolves on the property.
After the tour, CPW Director Jeff Davis answered questions of legislators, ranchers, and media who were there.
“This meeting was great. I’m so glad that the Gittlesons hosted us. It’s so important to CPW with all of what’s going on that we are here to listen and understand and try to create some durable solutions with the ranching community and the rest of Colorado’s residents.”
Davis answered questions for about an hour until heavy rain, hail and wind blew through the Gittleson’s ranch, making any communication impossible in the metal barn. No one could hear. And then the mosquitos came out in force.
Merrit Linke was at the gathering. Linke is a Grand County Commissioner and also Vice President of the Middle Park Stockgrowers. He also explained how the wolves that have been killing cattle in Grand County do not have as much of a fear of humans than the wolves doing the killing of livestock in Jackson County. The Grand County wolves were reintroduced by CPW from Oregon in December. The wolves in Jackson County naturally migrated down from Wyoming.
Marie Haskett of Meeker attended the meeting. She is the current head of the CPW Commission. Haskett is an active Board Member of the Colorado Outfitters Association, and the Northwest Colorado Outfitters Association. She is a past board member of the Meeker Chamber of Commerce, White River Neighborhood Group, Platte River Chapter of the COA, and served 8 years on the DORA Outfitter Licensing Board.
Those legislators there were:
