Colorado Parks and Wildlife has now confirmed today the death of a cow and a calf from wolves in Grand County earlier this month.
This comes AFTER the Copper Creek Pack was removed from the area. That breeding pair of wolves (with four pups), was responsible for at least 20 killings of sheep and cattle owned by Conway Farrell in Grand County.
“These wolves that came in, and it’s a whole different pack from Grand County, and they’ve been killing over there north of Kremmling. This is going to keep continuing to happen. CPW needs to come in as soon as they have these wolves depredating like this on livestock and they need to come in and remove the problem wolves. Otherwise, it’s going to be the same as the Copper Creek Pack. The elk and deer numbers around here are so low, CPW has mismanaged our elk and deer numbers so bad, we have 40 percent of the elk we had five years ago. Our deer numbers are at an all time low. These elk and deer don’t exist like everybody thinks they do for them to eat so they come in, and there’s no elk and deer for them to eat, and they go right to livestock.”
Ranchers in Grand County told Steamboat Radio News of more dead cattle on Sept. 10. We asked CPW for confirmation and the Confirmed Gray Wolf Depredation Information page on the CPW website was updated today, on Sept. 23. It says:
- September 9, 2024. Grand County. No claim submitted. 1 cow and 1 calf involved.
The CPW website adds, “The claimant may also elect to delay filing their claim up to December 31 for the year when the losses occurred.” Some ranchers are saying they will wait until the end of the year to submit a claim because many ranchers have multiple claims of wolf depredations.
