A private plane flew into the Eagle County Regional Airport Sunday afternoon, from Prince George, British Columbia. It was the same plane that flew wolves in to Colorado from Oregon in December of 2023, under the direction of Lighthawk Conservation Flying, which is a non-profit that transports animals.
Witnesses were there and saw three Colorado Parks and Wildlife vehicles leave the airport. One had a trailer and two trucks had animal crates. We have since seen video of those three CPW vehicles leaving the airport, and video of the vehicles on I-70 in Glenwood Canyon. CPW has said wolves will be released in either Pitkin, Eagle, or Garfield counties, but no other specifics have been given.
We have asked CPW for confirmation as to whether these are wolves from British Columbia being released in Colorado.
Bridget O’Rourke, the Statewide Public Information Officer, said, “Due to the complexity of the operation, and to ensure the safety of our staff and the animals, CPW will not be sharing wolf release details while the operation is underway. We will issue a press release and hold a press conference with our experts to answer all media questions when the operation is complete and when our experts are available.”
We spoke with Colorado State Senator Dylan Roberts Sunday who provided a statement.
“My legislative colleagues and I who represent the areas where the wolves have been, like Speaker McCluskie and myself, and where the wolves appear to be coming next, like Representative Lukens, myself, Senator Catlin, and Representative Velasco. We’re all monitoring this very closely. We are concerned for the impacts that it is going to have on our constituents, of course. But most importantly, we want to make sure that CPW honors the commitment they made this past week of having all seven items that the ranchers had asked for to help them mitigate the impacts of wolves and to deal with the day-to-day impacts of having a predator on the landscape, and now in new parts of Colorado. We’re going to be following this very closely. This has always been a very fluid situation that these wolves are now entering Colorado and being released here, so we’ll make sure we are doing what we can to stand up for our districts.”
Colorado Parks and Wildlife sent a press release on Saturday that the operation had begun to capture and transport as many as 15 gray wolves in British Columbia and transport them to Colorado.
