Wolf spotted on game cam in Jackson County

A Jackson County producer has shared pictures with Steamboat Radio News of a wolf in the corrals on the rancher’s property, “about 40 yards from my front door.” The pictures are from 11:27 p.m. Sunday, March 23.

The rancher has asked to remain anonymous, and adds that Colorado Parks and Wildlife has been keeping the rancher informed, “really informed,” of when wolves are on or near the property adding that those notices have been coming repeatedly in the past week.

One picture shows a collar on the wolf. Because the wolf is collared, CPW is able to keep the rancher informed of wolf activity near the property.

The producer has livestock guardian dogs, “who are on high alert, and have been barking constantly.”

The producer says the wolves have been next to the sheep pen and the cattle are “about to start calving.”

“It’s coming.”

Colorado Parks and Wildlife has confirmed recent wolf kills on the Confirmed Gray Wolf Depredation Information, of a dog and a cow in Jackson County, but that the killing of the cow was from an uncollared wolf.

The Confirmed Gray Wolf Depredation Information Page has a long list of wolf depredations in Jackson County, dating back to Dec. 19, 2021. Those totals include:

Four dogs
Three sheep
19 cattle

Colorado Parks and Wildlife will not confirm location information of wolves with media, instead referring media and the public to the “Tracking Collared Wolf Activity” Map, which is updated monthly.

“Colorado Parks and Wildlife’s Collared Gray Wolf Activity Map will help inform the public, recreationists and livestock producers on where wolves have been in the past month.”

The most recent map lists notable updates from February 2025, including how data cannot be collected from uncollared wolves that are in the state.

“The February 2025 map is the first that includes a full month’s data for wolves translocated from during the 2024-2025 capture season. Individual or groups of wolves can travel widely and have not necessarily settled in any particular area. In addition, there are uncollared wolves in Colorado whose movements cannot be captured in this map.”

The Tracking Collared Wolf Activity map should be updated Tuesday, March 25.
