CPW reports wolf activity in this month's watershed map

Colorado Parks and Wildlife has released this month’s wolf watershed map, as of July 23. A watershed is a geographic unit that drains water into a specific waterbody. If a collared wolf set foot in a watershed, the GPS position was recorded.

This month’s map shows wolf activity throughout south and central Routt County, central and northeast Moffat County, central and eastern Rio Blanco County, and most of Jackson County. No more specifics are ever given.

In the update, CPW says wolves continue to make broad movements across many western counties, and that they’ll travel long distances to find food, mates, and space to live.

Three more wolf packs have been confirmed, in addition to the Copper Creek Pack that was formed last year in Grand County but is now in Pitkin County.

Wolf packs are officially recognized only after a breeding pair of wolves has reproduced in late spring. While CPW staff have seen pups at some of the dens, there is no confirmed pup count for all of the packs.

CPW asks that you report any wolf sightings as it is helpful for monitoring and tracking. And please include a high-quality photo or video if possible.

Wolves continue to make broad movements across many western counties (see map). Wolves travel long distances to find food, mates and space to live.
CPW has recognized three new wolf packs in the state, in addition to the Copper Creek Pack that formed last year.
- One Ear Pack in Jackson County
- King Mountain Pack in Routt County
- Three Creeks Pack in Rio Blanco County
Wolf packs are officially recognized only after a breeding pair of wolves has reproduced in late spring. While CPW staff have seen pups at some of the dens, there is no confirmed pup count for all of the packs.

Our staff continues to monitor four dens in Colorado and will include minimum counts of the entire wolf population in our annual biological year reports. Receiving reports of wolf sightings from the public, especially those accompanied by high-quality photos or videos, is extremely helpful to CPW as we monitor and track the movement of gray wolves. This will become increasingly important as the population of uncollared wolves grows through successful restoration and natural immigration into Colorado.

Report the Take of Wolves

In addition to being federally protected, gray wolves are also a state-endangered species in Colorado, and wolves may not be taken (harmed, harassed, or killed) for any reason other than self-defense. The gray wolf in Colorado is protected by the federal Endangered Species Act (ESA) and state law. Penalties for illegal take can vary and include fines up to $100,000, jail time and loss of hunting privileges.
