Colorado Parks and Wildlife has confirmed the death of a female gray wolf in Southwest Colorado. The wolf is #2506, one of 15 introduced to Colorado last January from British Columbia. Six of those wolves have now died. The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service is investigating the cause of death. No other details are being released, except for what is in the following press release.
Press Release from Colorado Parks and Wildlife; Nov. 7, 2025.
DENVER – Colorado Parks and Wildlife received a mortality alert for female gray wolf 2506 on October 30, 2025. The agency has confirmed the mortality took place in Southwest Colorado.
As a federally listed species under the Endangered Species Act, the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service is investigating.
A final determination of the cause of death will not be made until the investigation is completed, including the necropsy, a foundational component of the overall investigation process. 2506 was part of the group of wolves translocated to Colorado from British Columbia in January 2025.
No additional details are available at this time.

More wolves are set to be released this winter. It has not been determined where those wolves will be from as they can no longer be from Canada. Colorado Parks and Wildlife spokesperson Luke Perkins told Steamboat Radio News on Thursday that that information will be released when it is determined where the next round of wolves is coming from.
Colorado Parks and Wildlife invited members of the media to an informational gathering Thursday at Roxborough State Park on the Front Range. Steamboat Radio News was there.
CPW confirmed that approximately 29 counties have recorded a presence of wolves and more than 20 wolves are known to be in Colorado.

Adam Baca, Wolf Conflict Coordinator, with Colorado Parks and Wildlife, presented information including a history and overview. Those slides are below. Baca also presented information on “Tools to Protect Livestock.” He said, “We’re trying to change the behaviors (of the wolves) that are more likely to lead to depredations.”
He emphasized the importance of ranchers getting a site assessment done. There have been 227 site assessments completed in Colorado as of this week.
CPW Managing Wolves in Colorado

A presentation was also done in the park on range riding, fladry. and night operations. Shelby Neiberger is a Range Rider for the Colorado Department of Agriculture. She said range riding is important because wolves respond to physical and human presence. It is important not to have a schedule when out there as wolves will get used to that. And when hazing wolves, they need to be caught in the act of interacting with cattle so they associate the hazing with that act.
